A recommendation: Pixar’s Elio is Delightful
“You are NOT alone.” Take your kids! Take your whole family! Or go watch it yourself! Be moved and entertained and dazzled and charmed by the magic of Pixar’s latest movie titled Elio. That simple name may be a deception, as this wonderful original animated movie is about Elio and a whole bunch of space aliens he meets – including his new friend Glordon. This heartfelt and uplifting Pixar adventure about friendship and space is based around the classic sci-fi question: “are we really alone or is there anyone else out there?” This time we get an answer - of course not! And that’s where the story really begins. Don’t take my word for it, everyone else is enjoying Elio and raving about it as well. One review writes: “Elio reminds us of the bravery it takes to be different, to feel deeply, and that the challenge to connect with others can sometimes feel more daunting than bridging millions of intergalactic miles.” I’ve been a huge fan of Pixar ever since the start, and I have a soft spot for almost anything they make, so of course I’m a bit biased anyway. But that’s because they always make these wonderful movies that often feature innovative, clever storytelling with all their usual visual splendor. Elio is no exception – they’ve created an entire stunning space world called the “Communiverse” where Elio ends up and that’s where he meets Lord Grigon and all the others. And just wait until you meet the space slug named Glordon - one of Pixar’s best new characters that instantly joins the ranks with Edna & Dory & Mike & Sully and all the other faves.

Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab), a space fanatic with an active imagination, finds himself on a cosmic misadventure where he must form new bonds with alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be. For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers… in Pixar’s original, all-new feature film Elio, the universe calls back! The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. “He’s an unusual kid who’s obsessed with getting abducted by aliens,” says director Domee Shi. “Elio feels like there’s nothing for him on Earth—he dreams of going to another world where he’s accepted for who he is.” The main voice cast also includes Zoe Saldaña as Elio’s mother Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, and Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon. Fun fact – this movie was delayed for a few years while Pixar worked on it to tweak and improve the story for release this year. It was originally supposed to open back in early 2024 (here’s a teaser from 2023 (Öffnet in neuem Fenster)) but was delayed all the way until June this summer. Different directors took over and finished it up and now we have a summer space comedy adventure to enjoy. There’s also a terrific score by Rob Simonsen which amps up the emotions. At its core, Elio is a uniquely delightful story about our desire for connection and friendship, and how loneliness can bring us together even in the vastness of space. In crazy turbulent times like we’re experiencing now in 2025, this is the kind of upbeat and wholesome movie we could all benefit from now - watch it.
