Brazil halts mother-to-child HIV transmission
Brazil has reached a milestone in the fight against HIV: thanks to early testing and free treatment, the virus is now rarely transmitted from mothers to their children. This success is enabled by a comprehensive public healthcare system, confirmed by the WHO. Source: POZ

India provides subsidy for care work
India is experimenting on a large scale with a universal basic income for domestic work: around 120 million women receive monthly subsidies of up to 30 euros — roughly 12 percent of a household’s budget on average. Source: BBC

Lung cancer deaths among women are declining
After more than 25 years of rising lung cancer deaths, there are finally encouraging signs for 2026. In the EU, deaths among women are expected to drop to around 12.5 per 100,000 – a decrease of over 5 % compared to 2020–2022. Source: MEDICALXPRESS

Austria abolishes tampon tax
Since January 2026, Austria has removed sales taxes on period products and contraceptives. Tampons, pads, menstrual cups, and condoms are now cheaper. They are also provided for free in schools, universities, and social institutions. The government aims to make access easier and fight period poverty. Source: VOL.AT

How mobile ultrasound devices help mothers in Kenya
The WHO recommends that all pregnant women receive at least one ultrasound before the sixth month. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, only about half of women have access to this care. In Kenya, portable ultrasound devices are showing how risks can be detected early. Supported by artificial intelligence, they also help compensate for the shortage of trained midwives on site. Turkey: Women crochet their way to financial independence
In the traditionally conservative eastern region of Turkey, women are crocheting swimsuits and summer clothing for the international market. The project gives them an income, strengthens their economic independence, and challenges traditional gender roles. Source: DW
