First international high-seas agreement takes effect in 2026

After more than 15 years of negotiations, the first international high-seas protection agreement will come into force in January 2026. At least 60 countries had to join first. Experts are calling it a “historic achievement.” The agreement lays the groundwork for establishing large marine protected areas on the high seas. Source: LE MONDE

Clean Chicago River attracts people and wildlife

Hundreds of people celebrated the first official swim in the Chicago River since 1927. Once heavily polluted, the river has seen decades of cleanup and restoration efforts. With cleaner waters, various fish species are returning, and beavers have even been spotted. Source: TH GUARDIAN

New hope for yellow-crested cockatoos in Hong Kong

Natural disasters and logging are threatening the nesting sites of the critically endangered yellow-crested cockatoo in Hong Kong. Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have now developed artificial nest boxes that closely resemble natural tree cavities. Baltic Sea: Robot supports recovery of wartime munitions
