Time for the big projects

I recently had a very inspiring conversation with my friend and reportage photographer Kai Behrmann ("Adventures in Reportage Photography"). We talked about what drives us – and how easily I get lost in the minutiae in everyday life.

I notice that I do a lot of small things: workshops, small exhibitions, Instagram posts, textbooks. They are nice, they provide quick results and recognition. But deep down, I know: I actually want to create something bigger.

A photographic book, carefully crafted and at a level that truly fulfills me. A profound artistic project that connects my two worlds – photography and biology, image and research, art and knowledge about water. An exhibition that does not just show pictures, but asks questions. Something that challenges me and sustains me in the long term.

Of course, the quiet voice immediately comes up: Do I have enough to say? Are my pictures good enough? And so I quickly land back on the "small stuff." But our conversation made it clear to me: now is the time to consciously make room for the big projects.

I don't know exactly where the path will lead. But I do know that I want to take it – step by step, curious and consistent.

Zeit für die großen Projekte

Neulich hatte ich ein sehr inspirierendes Gespräch mit Kai Behrmann („Abenteuer Reportagefotografie“). Wir sprachen über das, was uns antreibt – und darüber, wie leicht ich mich im Alltag in Kleinkram verliere.

Ich merke, dass ich viele kleine Dinge mache: Workshops, kleine Ausstellungen, Insta-Posts, Lehrbücher. Sie sind schön, sie geben schnelle Ergebnisse und Anerkennung. Aber tief in mir weiß ich: eigentlich möchte ich etwas Größeres schaffen.

Ein fotografisches Buch, sorgfältig ausgearbeitet und auf einem Niveau, das mich wirklich erfüllt. Ein künstlerisches Projekt mit Tiefgang, das meine beiden Welten verbindet – Fotografie und Biologie, Bild und Forschung, Kunst und Wissen über das Wasser. Eine Ausstellung, die nicht nur Bilder zeigt, sondern Fragen stellt. Etwas, das mich selbst herausfordert und langfristig trägt.

Natürlich kommt sofort die leise Stimme: Habe ich genug zu sagen? Sind meine Bilder wirklich besonders? Und so lande ich schnell wieder im „Kleinen“. Doch unser Gespräch hat mir klar gemacht: Es ist an der Zeit, mir bewusst Raum für die großen Projekte zu nehmen.

Ich weiß nicht, wo der Weg genau hinführt. Aber ich weiß, dass ich ihn gehen will – Schritt für Schritt, neugierig und konsequent.

In Kai Behrmann’s podcast "Abenteuer Reportagefotografie" I was once more invited as a cohost. As Kai writes, we “sat down with Australian photographer Adam Ferguson at the Media Days of the "La Gacilly – Baden Photo"-Festival, which runs until mid-October 2025 in Baden, near Vienna. Our conversation centers on “Big Sky”, his decade-long exploration of Australia’s interior. What began in 2013 as an attempt to move beyond the romantic clichés of the Outback grew into a complex portrait of rural life—shrinking towns, enduring Indigenous connections to land, and the pressing realities of climate change and globalization.”

In Kai Behrmanns Podcast „Abenteuer Reportagefotografie“ war ich erneut als Co-Moderator eingeladen. Wie Kai schreibt, trafen wir uns mit dem australischen Fotografen Adam Ferguson bei den Medientagen des „La Gacilly – Baden Photo“-Festivals, das bis Mitte Oktober 2025 in Baden bei Wien stattfindet. Unser Gespräch dreht sich um „Big Sky“, seine zehnjährige Erkundung des australischen Hinterlandes. Was 2013 als Versuch begann, die romantischen Klischees des Outbacks hinter sich zu lassen, entwickelte sich zu einem komplexen Porträt des ländlichen Lebens – schrumpfende Städte, die anhaltende Verbundenheit der indigenen Bevölkerung mit ihrem Land und die drängenden Realitäten des Klimawandels und der Globalisierung.“
