The first part of our special feature on the Frankfurter Buchmesse, which starts on 15 October and will feature the Philippines as guest of honour, is a video of a panel discussion with three female writers from the Bikol region. Curated by Kristian Sendon Cordero, the event at the Savage Mind: Arts, Books, Cinema Cultural Centre with Mia Tijam (Flowers for Thursday), Mary Jane Guazon Uy (The Book of Pedro Bautista), Trixie Adviento Odiamar (Tabi, Apo, a bilingual English-Bicolano children’s book) and Axel Timo Purr (Literatur.Review) takes an in-depth look at the authors‘ works and explores questions of colonial history and its echoes in the present day. It also considers the evolution of gender identities from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as the ongoing armed resistance in the region. And it finally demonstrates that great literature is not confined to the capital city of Manila.
