Silhouettes with Impact

Autumn isn't the ideal season for playing with the sun. But there are those bright days when everything falls into place. If you can take a couple of hours to photograph the street, you'll get a great result.

Sometimes it doesn't take much: the right light, a few people, a clear background. In our book chapter on silhouettes, Siegfried Hansen and I talk about how magical it can be to play with contrasts: The sun shines into narrow alleys, and suddenly everyday scenes become little theatrical pieces. It's not just the light that's important – it's your gaze. Where are you standing? What are you emphasizing? What are you leaving out?

The camera settings are easy. Most important: in metering, point at a light background. And use exposure compensation: –2 (underexpose!)

• Tip: Crouch down – this way, the silhouette stands out clearly against the sky

• Important: No distracting details, no backpacks, no overlaps

And then comes that flow moment: you see the scene, feel the idea – and click! An image emerges that impresses with its contrasts. Completely without AI or gimmicks. It's a simple street game that generates a lot of satisfaction. And the best part: you can't recognize the people, they appear just as a black silhouette.

Der Herbst ist nicht die ideale Jahreszeit für Spiele mit der Sonne. Aber es gibt diese strahlenden Tage, da passt alles. Wenn du dir dann zwei Stündchen Zeit nehmen kannst, um in der Straße zu fotografieren, bekommst du eine tolle Ausbeute.

Manchmal braucht es nicht viel: das richtige Licht, ein paar Menschen, ein klarer Hintergrund. In unserem Buchkapitel über Silhouetten erzählen Siegfried Hansen und ich, wie magisch es sein kann, mit Kontrasten zu spielen: Die Sonne scheint in enge Gassen und plötzlich entstehen aus Alltagsszenen kleine Theaterstücke. Wichtig ist dabei nicht nur das Licht – sondern dein Blick. Wo stehst du? Was lässt du weg? Was hebst du hervor?

Die Kameraeinstellungen sind einfach. Wichtig: Richten Sie die Belichtungsmessung auf einen hellen Hintergrund. Verwenden Sie die Belichtungskorrektur: –2 (Unterbelichtung!)

• Tipp: Gehen Sie in die Hocke – so hebt sich die Silhouette deutlich vom Himmel ab.

• Wichtig: Keine störenden Details, keine Rucksäcke, keine Überlappungen. 

Und dann kommt dieser Flow-Moment: Du siehst die Szene, fühlst die Idee – und klick! Ein Bild entsteht, das durch die Kontraste beeindruckt. Ganz ohne KI und Schnickschnack. Es ist ein einfaches Spiel in der Straße, das viel Zufriedenheit generiert. Und das Beste: man erkennt die Menschen nicht, nur als schwarze Silhouette. Du verstößt damit also gegen keine Regeln der DSGVO.
