I live in the EU — and one of the positive aspects is that, alongside national laws, there are EU-wide rules that protect people, the environment, and nature. Today, I’d like to introduce you to a few of them.

EU: Renewable energy surpasses fossil fuels

Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar have, for the first time, generated more electricity in the EU than fossil fuels. Overall, renewables now account for nearly half of the EU’s total power production. At the same time, electricity generation from coal has fallen to a historic low. Source: HEISE ONLINE

The EU approves “My Voice, My Choice.”

The European Parliament approved a fund to help women from countries with strict abortion laws travel and access medical care in other EU states. The move follows the citizen initiative “My Voice, My Choice”, which collected over a million signatures. Source: REUTERS

EU bans destruction of unsold clothing

Millions of unsold garments end up in the trash in the EU every year. That’s about to change: Large fashion companies will no longer be allowed to destroy their stock. The EU aims to protect the environment and climate while promoting more sustainable business models. Source: EARTH.ORG

New EU rules: Better protection for package holidays

The EU is strengthening the rights of travelers on package tours. In the future, travelers will find it easier to cancel for free if problems at the destination or point of departure significantly impair the trip. Among other changes, vouchers can be refused; if requested, those affected will receive a refund within 14 days. Source: EUNEWS

EU: Transgender people have the right to matching IDs

The European Court of Justice has ruled that EU member states must update gender markers on identification documents to match the identity of transgender individuals. Otherwise, those affected could face discrimination or disadvantages during identity checks, travel, or in their daily lives. Source: DW

Flight cancellation: Airline must also refund commissions

The European Court of Justice has strengthened passenger rights: If a flight is canceled, airlines must also reimburse any booking fees charged by online portals—even if the airline did not know the exact commission amount. Source: LUXEMBOURG TIMES
