Why we go out alone with the camera

A few days ago I spoke with Wolfgang Mertens who invited me as a guest to his podcast. A relaxed conversation (in German) and we quickly arrived at something essential:

Street photographers are highly social and solitary at the same time. Are we strange? We love people, we choose the city for relax, we need people, and yet, we want to go out alone as much as possible. A paradox. We walk into crowded streets not to escape solitude, but to choose it. Total freedom to focus, observe, be fully present with our cameras.

For me, street photography anchors me in the moment. No past, no future. Just what unfolds in front of me. A kind of balm for the soul. It is not about collecting images. It is about attention, presence, and being at ease with myself, even surrounded by strangers.

Sometimes I come home with strong pictures. Sometimes with none at all. It does not really matter. What I care for are the moments: an unposed scene, an unexpected encounter, a smile, a short conversation. In that moment, I feel connected.

Alone, and connected to myself. Allein und mit mir selbst verbunden.

I send you this small invitation for your next walk: go out alone, take your camera and be open to what you see, but don’t focus only on the images. Dare to approach someone. You can read in their gesture and mimic whether they are open for contact. Yes, people often are sceptical, but I see that far more people are interested and curious. Just as me.

And in the end, sometimes, the most important thing you take home is not on your memory card. It is a nice unexpected encounter.

Warum wir mit der Kamera alleine unterwegs sind

Vor ein paar Tagen sprach ich mit Wolfgang Mertens, der mich zu seinem Podcast eingeladen hatte. In einem entspannten Gespräch (Link s. unten) kamen wir schnell zu einem wichtigen Punkt:

Straßenfotografen sind gleichzeitig sehr gesellig und sehr eigenbrötlerisch. Sind wir seltsam? Wir lieben Menschen, wir suchen die Stadt zur Entspannung, wir brauchen sie, und doch wollen wir so oft wie möglich allein unterwegs sein. Ein Paradoxon. Wir begeben uns in die belebten Straßen, nicht um der Einsamkeit zu entfliehen, sondern um sie bewusst zu suchen. Die Freiheit, uns zu konzentrieren, zu beobachten, ganz im Moment mit unseren Kameras zu sein.

Mich verankert die Straßenfotografie im Augenblick. Keine Vergangenheit, keine Zukunft. Nur das, was sich vor mir entfaltet. Es ist mein Balsam für die Seele.

Es geht nicht ums Sammeln von Bildern. Es geht um Aufmerksamkeit, Präsenz und darum, selbst inmitten von Fremden und der lebendigen Stadt meine innere Ruhe zu finden. Und Begegnungen.

Manchmal komme ich mit starken Bildern nach Hause. Manchmal mit gar keinen. Das ist eigentlich egal. Mir sind die Momente wichtig: eine ungestellte Szene, eine unerwartete Begegnung, ein Lächeln, ein kurzes Gespräch. Eine flüchtige Verbindung mit jemandem, der keine Angst vor meiner Anwesenheit oder meiner Kamera hat. In diesem Moment fühle ich mich verbunden.

Ich möchte dich einladen bei deinem nächsten Fotowalk mit der Kamera allein loszugehen. Sei offen für das, was du siehst, aber konzentriere dich nicht nur auf die Bilder. Trau dich, jemanden anzusprechen. Du kannst an seiner Mimik und Gestik erkennen, ob er oder sie für ein Gespräch offen ist. Ja, viele Menschen sind skeptisch, aber ich sehe, dass noch mehr Menschen interessiert und neugierig sind. Genau wie ich.

Und am Ende ist das Wichtigste, was du mit nach Hause nimmst, manchmal nicht auf deiner Speicherkarte. Es ist eine schöne, unerwartete Begegnung.
