Is a face today an expression or a biometric data set?

A new article by Alvin Greis triggered a real shift in me. Street photography is changing, because in the digital world a face is no longer only image with expression or humanity. It is now a biometric scan that delivers identifiable data.

That changes the ethical weight of what we publish. The moment I upload a face, it is no longer part of a fleeting street encounter. It can be found, shared, detached from its original context, and connected to systems far beyond my control. My camera is not a biometric scanner in a technical sense, of course, but once an image enters the internet, the photographed face acquires exactly that new quality.

This is a turning point for me. I have often said and taught in my workshops, that faces and gestures are at the heart of street photography. In a way, I still believe that, because people remain at the center of my work. But I no longer believe that the identifiable face, as digital data, can be justified.

This does not mean that I will stop photographing people, and certainly not that AI is any substitute for walking through cities with a camera in my hand, looking, waiting, and discovering. That remains one of my deepest joys. But I want to find other ways to show human presence, tension, and poetry, ways that rely less on the readable face and more on relationships, traces, light, rhythm, and visual effects in the urban environment.

I see this as a challenge. Good photography has never been about repetition alone. It has always also been about responding to the world as it changes.

Ein neuer Artikel von Alvin Greis hat bei mir etwas in Bewegung gebracht. Er formuliert sehr klar, wie sich Street Photography verändert. Das Gesicht ist im digitalen Raum nicht mehr nur ein Bild von Ausdruck oder Menschlichkeit, sondern es liefert biometrische identifizierbare Daten.

Dadurch verschiebt sich das ethische Gewicht der Veröffentlichung. In dem Moment, in dem ich ein Gesicht hochlade, ist es nicht mehr Teil eines flüchtigen Straßenmoments. Es kann gefunden, geteilt, aus dem Zusammenhang gelöst und mit Systemen verknüpft werden, die ich als Fotografin nicht kontrolliere. Mein Fotoapparat ist natürlich kein biometrischer Scanner im technischen Sinn, aber im digitalen Raum bekommt das fotografierte Gesicht genau diese neue Qualität.

Für mich ist das ein Wendepunkt. Ich habe oft gesagt, und auch in meinen Workshops gelehrt, dass Gesichter und Gesten das Zentrum der Street Photography sind. In gewisser Weise glaube ich das immer noch, denn der Mensch bleibt für mich das Zentrum. Aber ich glaube nicht mehr, dass das identifizierbare Gesicht als digital lesbarer Datensatz heute noch so selbstverständlich zu rechtfertigen ist.

Das bedeutet nicht, dass ich aufhöre, Menschen zu fotografieren, und schon gar nicht, dass KI für mich irgendein Ersatz wäre. Ich möchte weiter mit meiner Kamera durch Städte gehen, schauen, warten, entdecken. Aber ich möchte andere Wege finden, um menschliche Präsenz, Spannung und Poesie sichtbar zu machen: weniger über das frontal lesbare Gesicht, mehr über Beziehungen, Spuren, Konstellationen, Licht, Rhythmus und die visuelle Sprache der Stadt selbst.

Ich empfinde das nicht als Verlust, sondern als Herausforderung. Gute Fotografie war nie nur Wiederholung. Sie war immer auch die Fähigkeit, auf die Veränderungen der Welt zu reagieren.
