The Polish parliament has voted in favor of banning fur farming. Breeders have transition periods until the end of 2033, and financial incentives are offered for earlier closures. Rabbits are exempt from the ban. The law still requires the signature of President Nawrocki. Source: SCIENCE X

World Conservation Congress calls for protection of the “mid-depth” ocean
At the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, a resolution was passed to protect the mesopelagic zone, an ecologically important deep-sea layer. Future activities like fishing or deep-sea mining should proceed only with extreme caution. Conservationists and industry representatives jointly supported the resolution. Source: MONGABAY

England plans faster penalties for wastewater pollution
The British government plans to simplify enforcement against water companies for wastewater discharges. Minor violations could incur automatic fines of up to £20,000, while enforcement for more serious breaches will also be streamlined. How Indigenous women in Brazil are saving forests
In Brazil’s Cerrado, record wildfires are becoming more frequent – yet the small indigenous territory of Santana has remained untouched for four years. A volunteer brigade of Bakairi women keeps the flames at bay. Their initiative began after the devastating fires of 2018 and is now considered a model for effective, community-based fire protection, showing how local responsibility can safeguard nature and lives. Millions of red crabs return to the sea
With the first summer rains, Australia’s Christmas Island sees its annual crab migration. Up to 100 million red crabs leave their forest burrows to breed on the coast. Residents help the crabs along their journey to the sea with rakes and leaf blowers. Source: EURONEWS

Haute cuisine for everyone – Marseille’s social restaurant revolution
