Queer rights are under pressure worldwide, which makes laws and court rulings that protect them especially important. The U.S. Supreme Court recently dismissed a lawsuit challenging same-sex marriage—a positive signal for the protection of minority rights.

France: Bird populations recover following insecticide ban

UK government unveils pan for the gradual phaseout of animal testing

For the first time, the UK government has outlined in detail how it plans to implement its pledge to reduce animal testing. By the end of the year, certain safety tests will no longer require live animals. For human drug testing, the use of dogs and non-human primates is set to drop by at least 35% by 2030. Source: BBC

Earth–space temperature gradient: Motor runs without electricity

U.S. engineers have developed a motor that runs without electricity or fuel. It relies solely on the temperature difference between the warm Earth and cold space: a specially coated plate emits infrared radiation into space and cools so much that it generates enough energy to power a Stirling engine. California sets new privacy standard for web browsers

In California, the new privacy law AB 566 was passed, requiring web browsers to provide an automatic opt-out signal for users. How Zanzibar’s “Solar Mamas” are transforming entire villages with solar power

In Zanzibar, so-called “Solar Mamas” are bringing light to villages. The Barefoot College training program teaches women without formal education to become solar technicians. They replace harmful kerosene lamps with solar systems, providing electricity to remote communities.
