I’m writing these words just minutes after the revelation that Netflix will soon subsume the vaunted Hollywood legacy empire that was once known as Warner Bros Pictures. It’s a move that seems to signal some tragic harbingers when it comes to the future of theatrical exhibition, as the big night out of going to the pictures feels like it’s suddenly going to be one with drastically fewer options.
Questions, too, of what will happen to the WB’s archive, and whether we’ll see their films appear in physical versions in the future, are also being floated, yet it’s likely too early to allow any cynical impulses to get the better of us.
