Biological causes of daytime sleepiness discovered, Australia protects koalas against chlamydia

This week is all about koalas. On Monday, we shared news about the planned “Great Koala National Park” in New South Wales. Today brings more good news: a new vaccine is set to protect koalas from chlamydia, a disease that can be deadly for them. Nationwide, these highly endangered animals are now being vaccinated to improve their chances of survival.

Biological causes of daytime sleepiness discovered

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have identified molecules in the blood associated with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). The study found that particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can reduce the risk of EDS. These findings could pave the way for new therapies. Source: NEW ATLAS

Australia protects koalas nationwide against chlamydia for the first time

Koalas in Australia are receiving a nationally approved vaccine against chlamydia for the first time. The bacteria can cause severe illness and even death in the animals. The vaccine boosts the koalas’ immune system, and early studies show it can reduce mortality in wild populations by up to 65 percent. Source: BBC

Dutch startup sets hyperloop speed record

A Dutch technology startup has set a European speed record with its hyperloop transport system. On the 420-meter test track at the European Hyperloop Center, the vehicle reached 85 km/h and successfully completed a complex lane-change test.
