Ich hab das mal als Anlass genutzt, um den Newsletter weiterzuentwickeln. Er ist auf Steady umgezogen, wo ich auch ein Archiv mit allen bisher verschickten Ausgaben angelegt hab. Steidl → 어

Die schönste Sache zuerst: Ich hab geheiratet, haha. Seit Anfang Juli sind Dayeon Auh und ich offiziell ein Ehepaar, und wenn dieser Fakt irgendwann durch die deutsche Bürokratie gesickert ist, werde ich nicht mehr Fabian Steidl sondern Fabian Auh heißen. 🙂 Passend dazu haben wir natürlich unsere Online-Shops schon zum Auh’s Shop zusammengelegt.

Die Aussprache von „Auh“ lässt sich gar nicht so einfach erklären. „Auh“ ist eine Romanisierung des koreanischen Vokals 어, den wir im Deutschen nicht haben. Ungefähr wie beim „o“ in „offen“. Ein bisschen besser vergleichbar wäre das „Au“ im englischen Wort „August“. Hier mal ein Link mit Audiobeispiel, haha. Im Moment ist der Namenswechsel aber noch nicht umgesetzt und es wird bestimmt noch ein paar Monate oder Jahre dauern, bis das überall aktualisiert ist.

EN — Steidl → 어 — The biggest thing first: I got married, haha. As of early July, Dayeon Auh and I are officially a married couple, and once that fact has trickled through German bureaucracy, I’ll no longer be Fabian Steidl but Fabian Auh. 🙂 Fittingly, we’ve already merged our online shops into Auh’s Shop.

The pronunciation of “Auh” isn’t easy to explain. “Auh” is a romanization of the Korean vowel 어, which doesn’t exist in German. A close comparison would be the “au” in the English word “August.” Here’s a link with an audio example, haha. The name change itself isn’t in effect yet, though, and it’ll probably take a few months or years until it’s updated everywhere.

Fotos aus Wien, Budapest und Kopenhagen

Ich war auch viel unterwegs seit dem letzten Newsletter, angefangen mit Budapest im Mai. Mein letzter Budapest-Besuch war 2009, fürs Sziget-Musikfestival. Seitdem hab ich die Stadt in so guter Erinnerung behalten, dass ich unbedingt nochmal hinwollte. Im Mai haben wir’s geschafft, als eine Art vorgezogene Flitterwochen. Fazit: Ist immer noch wunderschön.

Auf dem Weg dorthin gab es außerdem einen Zwischenstopp in Wien, für die Art-Book- und Zine-Messe „Fanzineist Vienna“, inklusive eines Besuchs auf dem Prater. Und jetzt im Juli noch eine Reise nach Kopenhagen. Fotos von allen drei Stationen gibt’s im Archiv.

EN — Photos from Vienna, Budapest and Copenhagen — I’ve been traveling a lot since the last newsletter, too, starting with Budapest in May. My last visit to Budapest was in 2009, for the Sziget music festival. I’d kept such fond memories of the city ever since that I really wanted to go back. In May we finally made it happen, as a kind of early honeymoon. Verdict: still beautiful.

On the way there, we also stopped in Vienna for the art book and zine fair “Fanzineist Vienna,” including a visit to the Prater. And now, in July, a trip to Copenhagen. Photos from all three stops are uploaded to the archive.

Neues vom Kartenspiel „Nio“

Ich habe endlich auch ein paar Fotos von den neuesten Prototypen meines Kartenspiel-Systems gemacht, das ich in einem der letzten Newsletter angeteasert habe. Mittlerweile trägt es den Namen „nio“, angelehnt an das schwedische Wort für neun. Es besteht aus 81 doppelseitigen Karten, die Formen, Farben und andere Eigenschaften kombinieren und sich für eine Vielzahl von Spielen eignen. Spielideen, „Print-and-Play“-Dateien und alle Details findest du unter nio.fff.haus. Es gibt auch noch einige physische Prototypen im Shop, und ich suche Unterstützung bei der Erstellung einer Version für den Tabletop Simulator. Wenn das dein Ding ist, schreib mich sehr gerne an! :)

EN — News on the card game “nio” — I finally took some photos of the latest prototypes of my card game system, which I teased in one of the last newsletters. It now goes by the name “nio,” inspired by the Swedish word for nine. It consists of 81 double-sided cards that combine shapes, colors and other properties, and work for a variety of games. Game ideas, print-and-play files and all the details can be found at nio.fff.haus. There are also still a few physical prototypes in the shop, and I’m looking for help building a version for Tabletop Simulator. If that’s your thing, feel free to reach out! :)

Neujahrskarte „Annual Feedback“

Ich hab diese Karten schon im Dezember verschickt, aber noch gar nicht gezeigt: Meine diesjährige Neujahrskarte „Annual Feedback“ war ein kleiner, unbeschwerter Fragebogen, mit dem ich Freund*innen und Familie angestiftet hab, kurz über ihr Jahr nachzudenken. Und weil ich davon immer ziemlich viele verschicke, dachte ich mir, ich lass diesmal die anderen schreiben. :) Jetzt auch in meinem Shop erhältlich.

EN — New Year’s Card “Annual Feedback” — I sent these out in December but haven’t shown them yet: This year’s New Year’s card “Annual Feedback” was a small, light-hearted questionnaire to nudge friends and family into sharing a little reflection on their year. And since I send out quite a few of these, I figured I’d let others do the writing this time. :) Now also available in my shop.

Bilderrahmen-Set aus Papier

Auch neu im Sortiment ist diese wirklich pfiffige Idee von mir selbst: Dieser Umschlag ist gleichzeitig ein schlichter Bilderrahmen aus Papier. Du kannst ein Foto, eine Illustration oder deinen ausgeschnittenen Lieblingshund reinsetzen, in einem Standard-Umschlag DIN A6 verschicken, und die empfangende Person kann ihn sofort aufhängen. Mitgelieferte Umschläge und Einlegekarten bestehen aus FSC-zertifiziertem Papier mit dem Blauen Engel und eignen sich unter anderem auch für das Standard-Fotoformat 9 × 13 cm.

EN — Paper Picture Frame Set — Also new in the shop is this really clever little idea of mine: The paper envelopes in this set double as a simple picture frame. You can insert a photo, illustration, or a cutout of your favorite pet, send it off, and the recipient can hang it up immediately. The included envelopes and insert cards are made from FSC-certified paper with the Blue Angel eco-label and are also compatible with the standard 9 × 13 cm photo format.

Instagram?

Wenn du meinem Instagram-Account folgst, hast du bestimmt schon gemerkt, dass es da ungewöhnlich ruhig geworden ist. Das hat zum einen damit zu tun, dass ich im September letzten Jahres einen neuen Job angefangen hab, der viel Aufmerksamkeit braucht. Zum anderen versuche ich schon länger, meine Internetgewohnheiten gesünder und meinen digitalen Fußabdruck kleiner zu machen, und in dem Kontext fühlt sich Instagram nicht mehr richtig an. Ich hab jedenfalls meine Inhalte rausgenommen, werde keine Beiträge mehr posten und freu mich irgendwie sehr, meinen Fokus jetzt stattdessen auf diesen Newsletter und andere Ideen zu lenken. Schön, dass du dabei bist.

EN — Instagram? — If you follow my Instagram account, you’ve probably already noticed that it’s gone unusually quiet there. Part of that is because I started a new job in September last year that takes up a lot of my attention. On top of that, I’ve been trying for a while to build healthier internet habits and reduce my digital footprint, and in that context, Instagram just doesn’t feel right anymore. Anyway, I’ve taken down my content, won’t be posting there anymore, and am honestly really excited to shift my focus to this newsletter and other ideas instead. Glad you’re here.

Ah, und Pixelfed?

Wie viele andere hab ich Anfang letzten Jahres Pixelfed ausprobiert, und muss sagen, dass das leider auch nicht der Kanal war, den ich gesucht hab. Wenn ich mich so durch die leeren Feeds meiner Pixelfed-Kontakte klicke, ging es anderen wohl ähnlich. Aber ich mag das Fediverse und will dabei bleiben. Deswegen wird mein Mastodon-Account künftig die Beiträge aus diesem Newsletter spiegeln, d.h. alles, was du hier liest, erscheint dann auch da. Falls du auf Mastodon bist, sag mal Hallo!

EN — Ah, and Pixelfed? — Like many others, I tried Pixelfed at the start of last year, and I have to say it wasn’t quite what I was looking for either. Scrolling through the empty feeds of my contacts there, it seems others felt the same way. But I like the Fediverse and want to stick around. So my Mastodon account will from now on mirror the posts from this newsletter, meaning everything you read here will also show up there. If you’re on Mastodon, come say hi!

EN — So, how’s it going? It’s been a while since the last newsletter: in the meantime I went on vacation, looked for a job, found one and started working, and cut back significantly on my social media use thanks to an app that effectively blocks my screen time. But of course, I still want to send you a few small updates from the past months.

Eine Auszeichnung für den Kalender „Aus der Bahn!“

Im März hab ich meinen Tagebuch-Kalender „Aus der Bahn!“ veröffentlicht und ich bin wirklich sehr dankbar über die breite positive Resonanz. Besonders gefreut hat mich die Unterstützung der Stiftung Buchkunst: Im Juni hat sie den Kalender im „Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung 2025“ mit einem Platz auf der Shortlist gewürdigt. Von Juli bis August wurde er im einBuchhaus in Berlin ausgestellt (das Bild oben stammt von dort, danke an Hyemi Cho dafür!). Und jetzt, in diesem Moment, liegt er auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse am Stand der Stiftung Buchkunst aus. Das waren sehr schöne Erfahrungen.

Ah, den Kalender gibt es natürlich auch noch zu kaufen, zum Beispiel in meinem Shop.

EN — An award for the calendar “Aus der Bahn!” — In March I released my diary calendar “Aus der Bahn!” and I’m really grateful for the wide, positive response. I was especially happy about the support from the Stiftung Buchkunst (German Book Art Foundation): in June, they honored the calendar with a spot on the shortlist for the “Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung 2025” (Young Book Design Award 2025). From July to August, it was exhibited at einBuchhaus in Berlin (the photo above is from there, thanks to Hyemi Cho for it!). And right now, at this very moment, it’s on display at the Stiftung Buchkunst booth at Frankfurt Book Fair. All in all, very nice experiences.

Oh, and of course the calendar is still available to buy, for example in my shop.

Arbeit am [untitled card game]

Im Moment arbeite ich an zwei neuen Projekten: Zum einen an einem umfangreichen Buchprojekt, das wahrscheinlich erst Ende nächsten Jahres erscheinen wird, und zum anderen an einem Kartenspiel, das ich gerade in freien Stunden teste. Genauer gesagt ist es ein kompaktes Kartensystem, mit dem sich viele verschiedene Arten von Spielen spielen lassen. Von schnellen Reaktions-, Gedächtnis- oder Puzzlespielen bis hin zu strategischeren Brettspielen. Vor allem aber soll es dazu anregen, eigene Spiele zu erfinden. Die Idee basiert auf einem zehn Jahre alten Semesterprojekt aus meinem Studium, das ich über den Sommer wieder ausgegraben und weiterentwickelt hab. Oben siehst du einen Mockup der aktuellen Kartendummies, mit denen ich teste. Mein Ziel ist es, ein kleines Repertoire an neun unterschiedlichen Startspielen auszuarbeiten, die gut funktionieren und Spaß machen, dann werde ich es in einer kleinen Auflage streuen und evtl. an Publisher schicken.

EN — Working on [untitled card game] — Right now I’m working on two new projects: one is an extensive book project that probably won’t be out until late next year, and the other is a card game I’m currently testing in my free time. More specifically, it’s a compact card system that can be used to play many different kinds of games — from quick reaction, memory, or puzzle games to more strategic board games. Above all, though, it’s meant to encourage people to invent their own games. The idea is based on a ten-year-old semester project from my studies, which I dug back up and further developed over the summer. Above you can see a mockup of the current card dummies I’m testing with. My goal is to work out a small repertoire of nine different starter games that function well and are fun to play and then I’ll distribute it in a small print run and possibly send it to publishers.

Vor ein paar Monaten, im Juni, als ich meinen Instagram-Konsum stark runtergeregelt hab, hat sich mein Gehirn gedacht, es erschließt mal ’ne neue Plattform, wo man vielleicht auch Dopamin bekommt. Also hab ich mich auf LinkedIn angemeldet (und natürlich auch, weil ich einen Job gesucht hab). So richtig viel Dopamin gibt’s da zwar nicht, aber du kannst dich trotzdem gerne dort mit mir vernetzen.

EN — LinkedIn — A few months ago, in June, when I was cutting way back on my Instagram use, my brain apparently decided it was time to explore a new platform where I might also get some dopamine. So I signed up for LinkedIn (and, of course, also because I was job hunting). There isn’t really that much dopamine to be found there, but feel free to connect with me anyway.

Kalender „Aus der Bahn!“

Ich bin so froh, endlich dieses Projekt teilen zu können, an dem ich seit Oktober 2024 arbeite. Ich hab einen Kalender namens „Aus der Bahn!“ produziert, mit einem Best-of aus allen Einträgen meines semifiktionalen Tagebuchs ever. Für jeden Tag im Jahr (366) hab ich Texte, Illustrationen, Bilder usw. ausgesucht und so gebunden, dass man sie aufhängen kann (die meisten Einträge sind auch tatsächlich an dem Tag entstanden, dem sie im Kalender zugeordnet sind). Die nächsten Wochen werde ich noch ein paar mehr Details dazu auf Social Media posten, weil der Prozess sehr tricky und spannend war und insane viel Handarbeit beinhaltet hat. Die Plastikspirale zum Beispiel, die die 742-seitige Publikation verbindet, hat einen Durchmesser von 8 cm und ist handgefertigt und von mir eingefädelt. Es gibt nur eine limitierte Auflage von 100 Stück, weil der so aufwendig ist zu machen. Du findest den Kalender natürlich in meinem Shop.

There’s only a limited edition of 100 copies, because it’s just that elaborate to make, lol. You’ll find the calendar, of course, in my shop.

Korea-Trip

Dieses Jahr werd ich den Mai und Juni in Südkorea verbringen und ich freu mich wirklich schon sehr drauf. Ich bin dort erst vier Wochen in einer Sprachschule, besuch die Familie meiner Partnerin und wir reisen ein bisschen durchs Land. Weil ich deswegen wenig am Rechner sein kann, pausier ich in der Zeit meine üblichen Social-Media-Aktivitäten, also nicht wundern.

EN — Stay in Korea — This year I’ll be spending May and June in South Korea, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be at a language school for the first four weeks, visit my partner’s family, and we’ll travel around the country a bit. Since I won’t be at my computer much because of that, I’m pausing my usual social media activity during that time, so don’t be surprised.

EP für JAS

Im September 2024 hab ich die Debüt-EP von JAS gestaltet, das war nice. Wir haben uns für eine cleane schwarz/weisse Lösung und klare Typographie entschieden und ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis.

Urlaub in Athen

Im Oktober habe ich eine kleine Geburtstagspause eingelegt und war seit langem mal wieder in Athen. Fotos von unserer Reise findest du in meinem Archiv.

Jahrbuch der Burg Giebichenstein

Dann ist im Dezember das Jahrbuch der Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein Halle (Saale) erschienen. Für die aktuelle Ausgabe 2023/2024 haben wir das Konzept nochmal justiert, die Produktion nachhaltiger und die Inhalte vielfältiger gemacht sowie einen anderen Turnus gewählt. Luka Löhner und ich haben dafür dann ein neues Gestaltungskonzept gefunden, mehr dazu im verlinkten Artikel auf der Website der Burg.

EN — Burg Giebichenstein yearbook — Then in December, the yearbook of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle (Saale) came out. For the current 2023/2024 edition, we adjusted the concept, made production more sustainable, diversified the content, and shifted to a different publishing rhythm. Luka Löhner and I developed a new design concept for it. More on this in the linked article on Burg’s website.

Neue Postkarte

Im neuen Jahr hab ich endlich die Tradition wiederbelebt, Neujahrskarten zu verschicken. Das diesjährige Motiv ist als zweifarbige Riso-Karte in die Post gegangen, gedruckt von Herr & Frau Rio. Die Karte gibt es zum Selbstausfüllen auch in meinem Shop.

Textsammlung „Tekse“

Damit meine eigenen Texte nicht nur sinnlos auf der Festplatte rumliegen, hab ich mir ein Format überlegt, wie ich die unkompliziert veröffentlichen kann. Dann hab ich zehn meiner Favoriten ausgewählt, die irgendwann zwischen 2016 und jetzt entstanden sind, hab sie ausgedruckt, mit Buchschrauben zusammengedreht und jetzt gibt es die in meinem Shop. Das war schön und mach ich bestimmt bald wieder.

EN — “Tekse” text collection — To prevent my own texts from just lying around pointlessly on my hard drive, I came up with a simple way to publish them. I picked ten favorites written sometime between 2016 and now, printed them out, bound them with book screws, and now they are available in my shop. That was nice and I'll probably do it again soon.

Zwei Jahre nach dem Release von „i’ll be gone for a little while“ haben Beachpeople noch mal eine CD-Variante der EP rausgebracht, die ich gestalten durfte, sowie einige andere kleine Goodies für alle Hörer*innen zur Verfügung gestellt. Am besten einfach mal deren Website auschecken :)

Inspiriert von einem Mathematikheft für Kinder, das 2023 in einer Verschenkekiste im Leipziger Osten lag, hab ich acht Postkarten entworfen und dreifarbig im Risodruck produziert. Die Karten sind als Set in meinem Shop erhältlich.

Ich hab endlich meine Website überarbeitet. Konzeption und Gestaltung sind von mir, Development ist von Florian Schimanski. Tausend Dank für die tolle Zusammenarbeit! Ich hab dadurch jetzt auch ein digitales Archiv für die Inhalte, die bisher auf Tumblr, Instagram und anderen fremden Plattformen lagen. Weil sich das wie sesshaft werden anfühlt, hab ich gleich die Domain gewechselt und muss nicht mehr ständig frrrst buchstabieren. Schau mal rein: fff.haus
