es gibt immer noch diese momente, in denen der schattenwurf eines gingkobaumes auf den putz eines hauses fällt. in denen menschen an einer bushaltestelle einem eichhörnchen zuschauen. kurz alles vergessen, was sie umtreibt, während das hörnchen zurückstarrt, als wüsste es etwas, das wir nicht wissen. und ich denke: jetzt. am leben. hier.
es gibt diese momente, in denen ich mich auf seltsame weise verbunden fühle, mit der welt. mit dem mensch_sein.
dabei sieht es düster aus und immer düsterer.
ich lese: parlament in niederlanden stimmt für antifa-verbot. “die antifa” gibt es nicht. aber es gibt antifaschistische arbeit, antifaschistische texte, und jetzt in den niederlanden wie in den usa ein bequemes mittel, jede kritik als terror zu klassifizieren. ein mittel, menschen zu verfolgen, weil sie etwas gesagt oder geschrieben haben oder weil sie vielleicht bestimmte kleidungsstücke tragen. dass faschist_innen alles verbieten wollen, was sich gegen sie wehrt, ist der nächste logische schritt.

wo wart ihr, als die demokratie abgeschafft wurde? man wird uns fragen.
ich frage mich unweigerlich, wie lang ich noch zeit habe. zum veröffentlichen. zum schreiben kritischer texte (diese zeilen hier fallen mit sicherheit unter antifa).
zum schreiben queerer texte. siehe usa. siehe uk. siehe deutschland und “gendersprache verbieten”. siehe schulen in hessen, die ihr social media komplett neu posten müssen, weil sie “gendersternchen” verwendet hatten und diese für behörden in hessen seit über einem jahr verboten sind. siehe prideflags, die nicht nur am bundestag verschwinden.
während ich dies schreibe, verfügt der us-amerikanische präsident, dass journalist_innen nur noch dasjenige aus dem pentagon berichten dürfen, was staatlich “autorisiert” wurde. dort wie hier werden journalist_innen massiv bedroht. zeitungen und rundfunk in deutschland zensieren sich selbst. sie begründen das mit der angst vor rechten shitstorms. die tagesschau berichtet über einen rechtsextremen aktivisten und nennt ihn “konservativ”. es wird zunehmend schwieriger, sich über das weltgeschehen zu informieren, wenn immer mehr berichterstattung an die rechte rhetorik angepasst wird.

ich lese dieser tage mehr den guardian, und im gegensatz zu früher nicht nur die buchbesprechungen. ich lese verschiedene deutsche tageszeitungen, eine, weil ich mir leisten kann sie zu kaufen, andere, weil sie kostenlos artikel im netz zur verfügung stellen. übrigens haben viele öffentliche bibliotheken tages- und wochenzeitungen abonniert. ich lese auf webseiten von NGOs, auf social media, ich lese newsletter. ich schaue dokumentationen und höre podcasts.
ich lese auch die meldung, dass nach absetzung der late-night show von jimmy kimmel derart viele disney-plus-abos gekündigt wurden, dass der server zeitweise zusammenbrach. dass die show jetzt wieder ausgestrahlt werden soll.
das ist nicht nichts.

ich will mir mehr zeit für bücher nehmen. ich will sonntags im bett liegen und lesen. es ist der versuch, nicht kaputtzugehen. aber auch: verschiedene stimmen wahrnehmen, so lang es sie noch überall gibt. ich plane eine neue newsletterkategorie zum thema, weil ich daran glaube, dass literatur eine wirkung hat. auf das denken und auf die gesellschaft. dass es dementsprechend eine wirkung hat, über literatur zu sprechen.
und über eichhörnchen, hier und da.

was kleines tun:
du musst die rechte rhetorik in den medienTM nicht hinnehmen, du kannst protestieren. eine mail ist schnell geschrieben. schreibe leser_innenbriefe, schreibe kommentare, nutze die feedbackfunktion der webseiten. ebenso kannst du sachliche berichterstattung würdigen und journalist_innen wissen lassen, wenn sie ihren job machen. unterschätze nicht die wirkung von lob.

they are still there. those moments when i spot a gingko’s shade on the white plaster of a building. when people waiting at a bus stop collectively watch a squirrel, oblivious of all their worries for a second or two, while the squirrel stares back, as if it knew something we don’t. and i am thinking: now. alive. right here.
there are those moments when i feel connected in such a peculiar way, to the world. to being human.
yet times are getting worse everyday.
i read: parlament in the netherlands votes for antifa ban. “the antifa” does not exist. but antifascist work and antifascist texts do, and from now on there is a handy way to classify any criticism as terrorism, in usa and the netherlands alike. a tool to prosecute people because they have said or written something or maybe worn a certain style of clothes. fascists banning every kind of resistance is only the consequential next step indeed.

where have you been when democracy was abolished? we will be asked.
i ask myself how much time i have left. to publish. to write critical pieces (these lines classify as antifa for sure).
to write queer texts. see usa. see uk. see germany and “ban gendersprache (literally gender speech, which means gender-neutral language)”. see schools in hessen who have to repost their complete social media because they had used “gendersternchen” (asteriks used in german gender-neutral language) which are banned in hessian administration since more than a year now. see prideflags, vanishing not only from the bundestag.
as i am writing this, the president of the usa decrees that journalists must report only such information from the pentagon that is “authorised” by the government. over there as well as here journalists are threatened severely. newspapers and broadcasters in germany censor themselves, saying it’s because they fear shitstorms by the (far) right. the tagesschau talks about a far right activist calling him “conservative”. it becomes increasingly difficult to stay informed about what’s going on in the world when news coverage is more and more adapted to rightwing rhetorics.

i am reading more of the guardian these days, not just the literature reviews like i used to. i read several german newspapers, one of them because i can afford it, others because they publish their stuff on the internet for free. by the way, many public libraries have newspaper subscriptions. i read NGOs’ websites and social media feeds and newsletters, i watch documentaries, listen to podcasts.
i also read that in the aftermath of jimmy kimmel’s suspension there has been such a mass cancellation of disney plus subscriptions that servers would crash for a while.
that the show is coming back to air now. that is not nothing.

i want to make more time for reading. i want to lie in bed on a sunday and read. it is my attempt to not break down, but also to perceive diverse voices as long as they are widely available. i am working on a new category of my newsletter regarding this topic. for i believe that literature has impact. on thinking and on society. that, therefore, it does have impact to talk about literature.
and about squirrels, now and then.

you don’t have to put up with right-wing rhetorics in the mediaTM. you are able to protest. an e-mail is a quick thing. go and write reader’s letters or comments, use the feedback button on websites. you can appreciate factual coverage as well and let journalists know when they are doing their job. do not underestimate the power of compliment.
