Ruling against AI deepfakes: Grok feature banned

A court in the Netherlands has prohibited the AI "Grok" from creating sexualized images of individuals without their consent. Violations could result in fines of up to €100,000 per day. It is one of the first rulings of its kind against AI-generated deepfakes. Source: AL JAZEERA

Uganda’s mountain gorillas no longer critically endangered

Etsy bans the sale of fur products

Etsy has updated its policies: starting in August 2026, the online marketplace will no longer allow the sale of fur products. However, other animal-derived products, such as leather, are not affected by the ban. The change followed several weeks of protests by activists. Source: FASHION UNITED

Marine protection milestone: Ten percent of the oceans officially protected

More than 10% of the oceans are already protected, according to the WDPA—a major milestone. To reach the "30 by 30" goal (30% by 2030), an area the size of the Indian Ocean must now be secured in record time, while also improving the quality of protection. Source: MONGABAY

Portugal introduces deposit system to tackle low recycling rates

With a recycling rate of only three percent, Portugal currently ranks last in the EU. The new "Volta" deposit system aims to change that: since April 10, bottles and cans up to three liters incur a ten-cent deposit. The goal is to raise the collection rate for plastic and metal to 90 percent by 2029 and to keep valuable resources in the loop. Source: EURO NEWS
