Today we’ve got not one but two Good News stories that turn their backs on coal: For the first time in years, electricity generation from fossil fuels is declining in China and India — and in Stockholm, an electric hydrofoil ferry is cutting CO₂ emissions in urban transport.

China and India slow down coal

Cancer prevention could save millions of lives

An analysis covering 185 countries shows that around four in ten new cancer cases are linked to modifiable risk factors. At the top of the list: smoking. This is followed by infections, alcohol, environmental pollution, and occupational exposure. Prevention could avert millions of cases — if policymakers and healthcare systems consistently act on it. Stockholm’s flying electric ferry cuts emissions by 94 percent

A new electric hydrofoil ferry connects downtown Stockholm with the suburb of Ekerö. It not only cuts travel time in half, but according to test data also reduces CO₂ emissions by about 94 percent compared to diesel-powered vessels. Source: EURONEWS

Depression: Endurance training especially effective

Endurance sports like running or swimming can effectively reduce depression and anxiety — in some cases just as effectively as medication or psychotherapy. That’s the finding of a new meta-analysis. Less crowding: Capri limits tourism

Capri is taking action against overtourism: Starting next season, tour groups visiting the island will be limited to a maximum of 40 people. Additional rules are intended to reduce crowding and noise and ease daily life for the island’s roughly 13,000 residents. Source: EURONEWS

Galápagos giant tortoises return after 150 years

For more than 150 years, the giant tortoises of Floreana were considered extinct. Now, 158 young tortoises have been reintroduced to the Galápagos island — bred from descendants carrying the genetic heritage of the extinct species. In the long term, up to 700 animals are expected to help restore the ecosystem. Source: BBC
