Photographing when the world melts into drops

Sometimes it's the days when you don't really want to go out that produce the best pictures. When the sky is gray and the city glistens in puddles, a subtle game of reflections and distortions begins: Rainy Windows.

So if you're bored on a rainy day, turn the tables and make the drops themselves the subject.

Here's how it works:

Get in the car, find a nice location with a view of your subject: a wall, a colorful facade, a person with an umbrella. Important: Park, don't drive!

Keep your technique simple

Focus: Manual, at 3–10 m (depending on what you want to focus on outside).

Aperture: f/16 – this way you get both the drops and the background in focus.

ISO: Automatic or slightly increased if it gets too dark.

Stabilize your camera: It's best to lean it on the steering wheel and compose over the screen, not force it through the viewfinder hole.

Composition is everything

Pay attention to clear surfaces behind the drops – walls, trees, sky – otherwise it quickly becomes too busy. A good photo thrives on the contrast between chaos and clarity.

A little pro tip:

Dark clothing helps avoid reflections on the glass. And: turn off the windshield wipers! Otherwise, even the prettiest drop will suddenly disappear.

Experiment with proximity

A distance of about 30–50 cm from the windshield is ideal. If you feel like it, try different perspectives – slightly angled, lower or higher – and observe how the pattern of the drops changes.

Fotografieren, wenn die Welt in Tropfen zerfließt

Manchmal sind es die Tage, an denen man eigentlich gar nicht raus will, die die besten Bilder bringen. Wenn der Himmel grau ist und die Stadt in Pfützen glitzert, beginnt für mich ein leises Spiel mit Reflexionen und Verzerrungen: Rainy Windows.

Wenn du dich also an einem Regentag langweilst, dann dreh den Spieß um und mach die Tropfen selbst zum Motiv.

So funktioniert es praktisch:

Setz dich ins Auto

Such dir einen schönen Standort mit Blick auf dein Motiv: eine Mauer, eine bunte Fassade, ein Mensch mit Regenschirm. Wichtig: Parken, nicht fahren!

Technik einfach halten

Fokus: Manuell, auf 3–10 m (je nachdem, was draußen im Fokus stehen soll).
Blende: f/16 – so bekommst du sowohl Tropfen als auch Hintergrund scharf.
ISO: Automatisch oder leicht erhöht, falls es zu dunkel wird.
Kamera stabilisieren: Am besten auf dem Lenkrad abstützen und über den Bildschirm komponieren, nicht durchs Sucherloch pressen.

Komposition ist alles

Achte auf klare Flächen hinter den Tropfen – Wände, Bäume, Himmel – sonst wird’s schnell zu unruhig. Ein gutes Foto lebt vom Gegensatz zwischen Chaos und Klarheit.

Kleiner Profi-Tipp:

Dunkle Kleidung hilft, Spiegelungen im Glas zu vermeiden. Und: Scheibenwischer aus! Sonst ist der schönste Tropfen plötzlich weg.

Experimentiere mit Nähe

Etwa 30–50 cm Abstand zur Scheibe sind ideal. Wenn du Lust hast, probier verschiedene Perspektiven – leicht schräg, tiefer oder höher – und beobachte, wie sich das Muster der Tropfen verändert.

Fazit

Regen ist kein Fotohindernis, sondern eine Einladung, die Welt neu zu sehen.

Es geht nicht um Perfektion, sondern um das Gefühl, wenn Außen und Innen, Realität und Spiegelung ineinanderfließen.

Also: Beim nächsten Regentag – Kamera schnappen, Lieblingssong an, Fenster beschlagen lassen und einfach schauen, was passiert.

New Rhythm: Every Two Weeks

The past weeks have been incredibly full – five intense weeks in Brazil, from Rio and Brasília to the COP30 in Belém, then on to Manaus and finally São Gabriel da Cachoeira, where we opened a new campus for Indigenous students and ran several field courses.

You’ll find a few 1-minute shorts about this below.

Since I will also be travelling a lot across Europe in the coming weeks, both for work and family, I will switch my newsletter rhythm to twice a month, always on Saturday morning.

This leaves space for inspiration. People sometimes assume I have three lives – I wish I did.

Neuer Rhythmus: alle zwei Wochen

In den letzten Wochen war ich viel unterwegs – fünf intensive Brasilien-Wochen von Rio über Brasília bis zur COP30 in Belém, weiter nach Manaus und schließlich nach São Gabriel da Cachoeira, wo wir den neuen Campus für indigene Studierende eröffnet und Feldkurse geleitet haben.

Da ich auch in den kommenden Wochen beruflich und familiär viel in Europa unterwegs bin, werde ich meinen Newsletter künftig nur noch zweimal im Monat, jeweils samstags früh, verschicken.

So bleibt genug Raum für Inspiration. Obwohl einige überzeugt sind, ich hätte drei Leben gleichzeitig – die Realität ist etwas weniger großzügig.
