"What question does this image pose?"

Recently, photographer and coach Hans-Georg Braun wrote me a sentence that stuck with me: "It is more valuable to ask questions than to give answers. As a working hypothesis, I could formulate for myself: 'What question does this image or this series pose for me (or others)?' Even a modest question is enough. Good composition completes the picture."

"It is more valuable to ask questions than to give answers. What question does this image pose?"

This, for me, is the essence of photography: not to explain everything, but to open up space for curiosity, reflection, and empathy.

Shapes, light, lines, all of that is craftsmanship. But what truly touches us are the questions in the image: Who is she? Where does the light lead? Why does this emptiness draw me in?

A good photograph doesn't show: it asks.

Practical

Next time you take a photo, try this:

1. Before you click, ask yourself: "What do I want to understand?" and not just: "What is beautiful?"

2. Look for clues, not proof.

3. When selecting your images, seek out those that leave room for interpretation. Hans-Georg's photo of the young woman and the word "curious" in the background illustrates this perfectly: He uses the camera to ask questions.

And questions arise in the viewer's mind.

Conclusion: Photography means asking questions. Not showing everything, not explaining everything. And sometimes the best response to a good photo is silence.

„Welche Frage stellt dieses Bild?“

Kürzlich schrieb mir Hans-Georg Braun, Fotograf und Coach, einen Satz, der hängen blieb: „es ist wertvoller, Fragen zu stellen statt Antworten zu geben. Als Arbeitshypothese könnte ich für mich formulieren: „Welche Frage stellt dieses Bild oder diese Serie für mich (oder andere)?“ Auch eine bescheidene Frage reicht aus. Gute Gestaltung rundet ab.“

Großartig! Danke Hans-Georg. Und danke auch für das wunderbare Porträt, das du mitgeschickt hast.

Genau das ist für mich der Kern der Fotografie: nicht alles erklären, sondern Raum öffnen, für Neugier, Nachdenken, Empathie.

Formen, Licht, Linien, all das ist Handwerk. Aber was uns wirklich berührt, sind die Fragen im Bild: Wer ist sie? Wohin führt das Licht? Warum zieht mich diese Leere an?

Ein gutes Foto zeigt nicht: es fragt.

Praktisch

Wenn du das nächste Mal fotografierst, probier das:

Frag dich vor dem Klick: „was will ich verstehen?“ und nicht nur: „was ist schön?“
Suche nach Spuren, nicht Beweisen.
Finde bei der Bildauswahl jene Aufnahmen, die offen lassen.

Hans-Georgs Foto einer jungen Frau mit Haarschmuck und dem Wort „neugierig“ im Hintergrund zeigt es perfekt: Er fragt mit der Kamera. Im Kopf der Betrachtenden tun sich Fragen auf.

Fazit: Fotografieren heißt, Fragen zu stellen. Nicht alles zeigen, nicht alles erklären. Und manchmal ist die beste Antwort auf ein gutes Foto Stille.
