What happens next?

There are photos that stay in your mind. And one reason for this can be: they hint at a story. They trigger a mental movie.

What kind of situation is this? What happens next?

That is precisely the core of storytelling in photography. It is not about effects. It is about content and authenticity. About what resonates between the images.

That's actually the topic of my friend Kai Behrmann, who, together with Thomas B. Jones, launched "Adventure Reportage Photography," with workshops and a book (see below). I have already taught some workshops with Kai, and the next one is already announced, see below.

It is exactly what it is all about: telling real stories with real images.

Storytelling in photography does not necessarily mean to show everything. It means showing a fragment that is larger than the image itself.

And it means captivating the viewer so they want to know more. A captivating image may only hint at a story, so that questions automatically arise. What kind of moment is this? Who are these people?

And, above all: what happens next?

That is exactly where storytelling in photography begins.

A good image does not show everything, but it opens a door.

And it works when it's real. When it makes us feel that what we see really happened that way.

Was passiert danach?

Es gibt Fotos, die bleiben im Kopf. Und ein Grund dafür kann sein: sie deuten eine Geschichte an. Sie lösen ein wahres Kopfkino aus.

Was ist das für eine Situation? Was passiert danach?

Genau das ist der Kern des Geschichtenerzählens in der Fotografie. Es geht nicht um Effekte. Es geht um Inhalte und um Authentizität. Um das, was zwischen den Bildern schwingt.

Das ist eigentlich das Thema meines lieben Kollegen Kai Behrmann, der mit Thomas B. Jones zusammen „Abenteuer Reportagefotografie“ mit Workshops und als Buch (s.u.) ins Leben gerufen hat. Mit Kai habe ich schon mehrere Kurse gegeben und der nächste ist bereits angekündigt, s.u.

Dort geht es genau darum: echte Geschichten mit echten Bildern zu erzählen.

Storytelling in der Fotografie bedeutet nicht unbedingt, alles zu zeigen. Es bedeutet, ein Fragment zu zeigen, das größer ist als das Bild selbst.

Und es bedeutet, die Betrachtenden zu packen, damit sie mehr wissen wollen. Ein spannendes Bild kann eine Geschichte nur andeuten, damit sich Fragen automatisch auftun. Was ist das für ein Moment? Wer sind diese Menschen?

Und vor allem: was passiert danach?

Genau da beginnt Storytelling in der Fotografie.

Ein gutes Bild zeigt nicht alles, aber es öffnet eine Tür.

Und es wirkt, wenn es echt ist. Wenn es uns spüren lässt, dass das, was wir sehen, wirklich so passiert ist.
