WHAT IS IT WORTH IF IT DOESN'T MAKE MONEY?

Thoughts on the value of work, sharing, and recognition

I recently listened to the podcast "The Creative Flow" by Roberta Bergmann. It was a conversation with Dominik Schmitz from the Open Press Project. The project is cool, but one sentence bothered me that wasn't the focus of the conversation, but rather came up in passing. Dominik said: "We don't want to make money with it."

What a statement. And throughout my life, whether as a scientist or as a photographer, artist, or book author, I have found myself reflecting on it. Because that's exactly how I work and always have. I have shared, researched, taught, photographed, and written all my life. And almost never with the goal of making money. Not out of negligence or naivety. But out of conviction.

Of course, I, too, would be happy about a somewhat more relaxed financial situation. But I became a biologist out of the bottom of my heart, a dead-end art. I have worked for decades in international research projects; my data has been incorporated into the IPCC climate reports. I have taught countless hours, given workshops, written books, and accompanied people. And often received little or no payment for it. In return, of course, I received exchange, inspiration, joy, and recognition.

And at the same time: ridicule, even from my own family: "Pia on the playground." "You're letting yourself be exploited." "You're living at the expense of society."

Really? I don't think so. Everything that comes in flows out again.

Sometimes, of course, I ask myself why I do this. Why do I keep sharing, even if it brings little? It does not bring much recognition outside of the "bubble", as with many charitable activities. In our world, performance is all too often measured by the bank balance.

But I stick to this: the value of our work isn't measured in money. Especially in photography, it's a lot about sharing ideas, creative perspectives, and practical tips. I do charge for that in my workshops, yes, I have to make a living But how often do I just go out with people, and share? And that gives me great joy.

In any case, I am grateful for this sentence in the podcast and the prompt to rethink what I am doing, and why.

Gedanken über den Wert von Arbeit, Teilen und Anerkennung

Neulich habe ich den Podcast „Der kreative Flow“ von Roberta Bergmann gehört. Es war ein Gespräch mit Dominik Schmitz vom Open Press Project. Das Projekt ist cool, aber ein Satz hat mich beschäftigt, der nicht im Zentrum des Dialogs stand, eher am Rande fiel. Dominik sagte: „Wir wollen kein Geld damit verdienen.“

Was für eine Aussage. Und mein Leben lang, ob als Wissenschaftlerin oder als Fotografin, Künstlerin, Buchautorin, finde ich mich darin wieder. Denn genau so ticke ich auch, schon immer. Ich habe mein Leben lang geteilt, geforscht, gelehrt, fotografiert, geschrieben. Und fast nie mit dem Ziel, Geld zu verdienen. Nicht aus Nachlässigkeit oder Naivität. Sondern aus Überzeugung.

Natürlich würde auch ich mich über eine etwas entspanntere finanzielle Situation freuen. Aber ich bin aus tiefstem Herzen Biologin geworden, eine brotlose Kunst. Ich habe Jahrzehnte in internationalen Forschungsprojekten gearbeitet, meine Daten sind in die IPCC-Klimaberichte eingeflossen. Ich habe unzählige Stunden gelehrt, Workshops gegeben, Bücher geschrieben, Menschen begleitet. Und oft kein oder wenig Geld dafür bekommen. Dafür bekam ich natürlich Austausch, Inspiration, Freude, Anerkennung.

Und gleichzeitig: Spott. Sogar aus der eigenen Familie. „Pia auf der Spielwiese“. „Du lässt dich ausnutzen.“ „Du lebst auf Kosten der Gesellschaft.“

Wirklich? Ich finde nicht. Alles, was reinkommt, fließt wieder raus.

Manchmal frage ich mich natürlich, warum ich das tue. Warum ich immer weiter teile, auch wenn es wenig einbringt? Das Einzige, das ich echt schade finde, ist dass es außerhalb der „Blase“ keine Anerkennung bringt. Wie auch bei vielen gemeinnützigen Tätigkeiten, in unserer Welt wird die Leistung allzu oft am Kontostand gemessen.

Aber ich bleibe dabei: der Wert unserer Arbeit bemisst sich nicht in Geld. Besonders in der Fotografie, da geht es viel ums Teilen, um Ideen, kreative Blickwinkel und praktische Tipps. Die lasse ich mir in meinen Workshops durchaus bezahlen. Aber wie oft gehe ich auch einfach so mit Leuten los, und dann wird geteilt. Und das macht mir große Freude.

Ich bin jedenfalls dankbar für diesen Satz im Podcast und den Impuls, mein eigenes Tun nochmal zu überdenken.

Hallo Pia,

danke für deine Mail. Schön, dass dich der Podcast angesprochen hat und du schreibst. Vor allem freut mich, dass du unser Denken zum Wirtschaften aufgegriffen hast. Dazu kommt selten Feedback.

Zu deiner Frage „Idealismus vs. finanzielle Realität“: Bei mir hält sich der Druck in Grenzen. Martin trägt den Ansatz mit, und auch meine Frau und meine Familie stehen dahinter. Und: Nach fünf Jahren verdienen wir inzwischen auch Geld mit dem Projekt. Es ist nur keine Priorität und nicht der Grund, warum wir das machen. 

Mein Antrieb ist zu zeigen, dass faires Wirtschaften möglich ist – aber auch dass es völlig okay ist, Geld zu verdienen. Wichtig ist der Stellenwert und die Fairness dabei. Wir haben zum Beispiel festgelegt und öffentlich gemacht, dass wir uns höchstens das deutsche Durchschnittsgehalt auszahlen. Das gibt uns eine klare Grenze: Unser Handeln soll ethisch bleiben und nicht rein vom Geld getrieben sein. Das klingt vielleicht hochtrabend, aber am Ende hilft es uns, nicht nur fürs Geld zu arbeiten. Wir glauben, dass das gesünder ist – für uns und das Projekt. Insofern ist es vielleicht gar nicht so altruistisch, wie es wirkt.
