Deceptively simple

A print on a wall. It’s a simple drawing, or so it seems. A few lines on paper, nothing more. It’s an animal. A cow. No, a bull.

When people see Picasso’s line drawings of a bull for the first time, they often wonder if this is still art. Hang on, that’s a Picasso? I could draw that!

You can draw anything with simple geometrical shapes. You can draw faces, animals and objects with a few simple lines.

But here’s the catch: Simplicity is often deceptive. Presenting something as complex as a face, or a bull, or an idea, in simple terms and with simple tools is not easy. You need to understand something very well before you can simplify it.

No matter whether your English feels like a painting in glorious colour and detail, or a shaky and tentative line drawing: This episode is for you.
