I’m more enthusiastic about European tech than I’ve been in months. Sure … OpenClaw creator is now moving to the US and left a clear message:
In Europe regulation is the number one issue, and that halts progress.
In US people are excited about building stuff
It’s of course sad to “lose” such great talent, but I guess anyone would take such an probably amazing offer to continue building on what you are excited about.
But … there are people still pushing things forward as well. A friend Clemens Helm (Si apre in una nuova finestra) is now developing Pinchy (Si apre in una nuova finestra) on top of OpenClaw focusing on solving the real world problems. So don’t fall into the trap of thinking there’s no future for tech in Europe.
I honestly believe our issue is not all political, while I do think projects like EU-INC (Si apre in una nuova finestra) are essential for Europe's long-term success.
So, I wrote a longer piece here in case you are interested.
https://nerdwerk.com/journal/26-2-europe-tech (Si apre in una nuova finestra)Networking is still important
One thing I’ve been terrible at over the last few years was networking. In my technical past I’ve spoken at various conferences, and with my network of choice (Twitter back then 😿), I actually was well connected.
That fell apart, and I stopped speaking at conferences, and also did not go to meetups anymore, and suddenly I had no network anymore to rely on for professional topics. 🙀 No conference organizers pinging me for speaking gigs. No learning platforms asking me to create courses. It’s all gone.
This year, my goal is to make up for that again. With my switch in career it even feels like I need to start from scratch.
I already had some calls with people I have not talked to for years. It was wonderful. I’ve now even joined a small Signal group here with fellow devs and friends. I love it.
Just doing those little things is already giving me much more momentum. A friend sharing feedback on a post I wrote. I get links to topics I otherwise would not have seen. I test out products I did not know about … it’s great. 😸
And the best part… people genuinely care about what everyone is doing and enjoy staying connected. So if you were struggling with the same thing and waited for a sign. THIS IS IT.
If you don’t know where to start, feel free to share my newsletter or posts with people that might find my writing interesting. It’s a good conversation starter. 😉
Have a smashing week & stay nerdy!
Best,
Roman
