Italy Road Trip and Project

I spent almost the entire month of August in Italy, a 4000 km road trip, all the way around counterclockwise: from the French border along the west coast down to the southernmost tip of Calabria, then north again on the Adriatic coast to north of Venice, and then back through the Po Valley.

I took many photos and made short videos in which I spontaneously captured and processed my impressions. There were many observations, surprises, great encounters, and exciting discoveries.

I was born and raised in Italy. I left my beloved country in 1984 after graduating from high school, but every year I visit my family and friends there several times a year.

I have long wanted to do a photographic project about "my Italy." But how? Where to start? I am not sure yet, but thanks to a long conversation with Hans-Jürgen Burkard, the World Press Award winner and wonderful photographer, I have understood a few things that are helping me to get started.

Here are his key points:

1. No concept = no project.

Develop an overarching idea: What is your Italy? What do you want to show – the present, the personal, the unusual?

2. Plan and leave room for chance.

Research places, events, or rituals – but be open to the unexpected. Good images often arise in between.

3. Find your visual language.

Consciously choose your style: e.g., wide-angle, bright, minimalist, colorful – and stick with it.

4. Avoid clichés, tell stories.

Don't show the typical postcard, but what lies behind it: the hidden, the real, the contradictory.

5. Work with rows and double pages in your mind.

Don't think in terms of individual images, but in series, pairs of images, visual rhythms – like a book or an exhibition.

6. Start – and stick with it.

You don't need a perfect start. Start with what you know and develop it further.

So, I am ready to start as soon as I went through the hundreds of photos I took!

Italien Roadtrip und Projekt

Ich war fast den ganzen August in Italien, ein Roadtrip von 3500 km, einmal rundherum gegen den Uhrzeigersinn: von der französischen Grenze an der Westküste entlang bis runter in den südlichsten Zipfel Kalabriens und auf der Adria-Seite wieder nach Norden bis nördlich von Venedig, und dann durch die Poebene zurück.

Ich habe viele Fotos gemacht und kleine Videos, in denen ich meine Eindrücke spontan festgehalten und verarbeitet habe. Es gab viele Beobachtungen, Überraschungen, tolle Begegnungen und spannende Entdeckungen.

Ichb in in Italien geboren und aufgewachsen, habe es 1984 nach dem Abitur verlassen aber jedes Jahr mehrmals meine Familie und Freunde dort besucht.

Meine Idee ist schon seit langem, ein fotografisches Projekt über „mein Italien“ zu machen. Bloß wie? Wo anfangen? Ich weiß es noch nicht genau aber Dank eines langen Gespräches mit Hans-Jürgen Burkard, dem World Press Award Gewinner und wunderbaren Fotografen, habe ich einige Dinge verstanden, die mir helfen, erstmal anzufangen.

Hier sind seine wichtigsten Punkte:

1.    Ohne Konzept kein Projekt.

Entwickle eine übergeordnete Idee: Was ist dein Italien? Was willst du zeigen – das Heute, das Persönliche, das Ungewöhnliche?

2.    Plane und lass Raum für Zufall.

Recherchiere Orte, Ereignisse oder Rituale – aber sei offen für das Unerwartete. Gute Bilder entstehen oft dazwischen.

3.    Finde deine Bildsprache.

Entscheide dich bewusst für deinen Stil: z. B. weitwinklig, hell, minimalistisch, farbig – und bleib dabei.

4.    Vermeide Klischees, erzähle Geschichten.

Zeig nicht die typische Postkarte, sondern was dahinter liegt: das Verborgene, das Echte, das Widersprüchliche.

5.    Arbeite mit Reihen und Doppelseiten im Kopf.

Denke nicht in Einzelbildern, sondern in Serien, Bildpaaren, visuellen Rhythmen – wie ein Buch oder eine Ausstellung.

6.    Fang an – und bleib dran.

Du brauchst keinen perfekten Start. Fang an mit dem, was du kennst und entwickle es weiter.

Also dann, los geht’s… sobald ich die hunderten Fotos durchgegangen bin!
