A recommendation: Sketch is a Creative Delight
"You're incredibly creative... but life is all about balancing the good and the bad." One of the most underrated indie discoveries of 2025 is actually from 2024. Sketch originally premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival almost one year ago. Angel Studios released the film earlier in August and it’s now playing in theaters nationwide. Seth Worley’s Sketch is an entirely original creation about creativity and grief. It's a magical, whimsical, fully amusing, delightfully clever, genuinely heartwarming, deeply inspiring adventure movie that anyone at any age can enjoy. Bring your whole family, but most importantly, take the kids to go see Sketch and let them be inspired and moved and intrigued by it. Not only is it tons of fun – it's the kind of movie that might actually make a real difference in someone's life. I’m always a bit skeptical when a movie comes out of a festival with tons of praise even though it doesn’t sound like it should be that good. But I’m glad I gave Sketch a chance and took the time to watch it. If you haven’t noticed, there are way, way too many movies these days being made about grief or involving grief in the plot. But if someone is going to make a movie that's actually, literally about grief, then this right here is a beautiful example of how to do it right. And how to make it meaningful and playful and endearing in a clever way. And how to actually address grief directly instead of just stuffing it into the script to give characters a cliche backstory. This is an empowering and inspiring film – letting amusing creativity flourish on screen to inspire the creativity inside of all of us. It's funny and the kids are great. This really is something special…

When a young girl’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, her drawings come to life-chaotic, real and on the loose. As the town descends into chaos, her family must reunite and stop the monsters they never meant to unleash. Sketch is both written and directed by filmmaker Seth Worley, making his feature directorial debut with this project after many other short films previously. The tagline: “This summer... unleash your inner monsters.” Sketch stars Tony Hale as Dad, D'Arcy Carden as his sister, with Bianca Belle, Kue Lawrence, and Kalon Cox as the three kids. I am not a fan of the distributor Angel Studios, they’re a hard right religious distributor and I do not support most of what they make/release. But they also bought this film from TIFF and it has no religious aspects in it at all. It’s actually amazing they bought this film because it’s entirely harmless and does not dip into any kind of politics or otherwise. It’s just a delightful, super fun, colorful, inspiring story about overcoming loss through creativity. I wrote in my full review (Abre numa nova janela): “Tony Hale is also absolute terrific in this. His reactions, his emotions, his believability, his comedic timing all perfect in here. He connects with these two kids delightfully, and they all make this story so much fun. If I didn't know this was an indie film that premiered at TIFF, I probably would've thought it was a big studio production. It's that well made and that entertaining – and exactly the kind of movie you want to run home and tell everyone else about.” I can’t recommend it enough! I hope more and more people will discover Sketch with more time and enjoy it as much as I did. We should always encourage creativity.
