NEW PODCAST: From Single Image to Series

Kai Behrmann invited me to talk about the development from spontaneous street photography to conscious, narrative photography. We philosophize about lightness and focus, about play and structure in photography.

The conversation focuses on the central question of how a single, intuitive image becomes a series that tells a story.

From Play to Series – and from Chance to Story

Photography is about telling stories – sometimes in one image, often in several. I love it when a single photo strikes like a small lightning bolt: spontaneous, emotional, surprising. But over time, you realize: A series can do more. More depth, more context, more meaning. It allows us to visualize changes – in light, in mood, in life.

That's precisely the topic of this podcast episode – and also of our next workshop, "From Street Photography to Reportage."

Street photography isn't rocket science, but it does require attention, patience, and openness.

Here are a few simple steps to help you progress from a single image to a series:

1. Observe

Before you shoot, take time to observe. Which scenes, lighting conditions, or movements repeat themselves? What atmosphere draws you?

2. Find your mini-theme

Look for a common thread: people in the rain, shadows on walls, waiting gestures, reflections, colors. A series often begins with three images that "speak to each other."

3. Photograph in sequences

Instead of just waiting for a single moment, keep moving. Observe how a scene changes. Capture different perspectives, distances, or emotions.

4. Learn to choose consciously

A series thrives not on quantity, but on rhythm. Three to seven images with an inner connection are often completely sufficient.

Vom Spiel zur Serie – und vom Zufall zur Geschichte

Fotografieren heißt, Geschichten zu erzählen – manchmal in einem Bild, oft in mehreren. Ich liebe es, wenn ein einzelnes Foto wie ein kleiner Blitz einschlägt: spontan, emotional, überraschend. Aber mit der Zeit merkt man: Eine Serie kann mehr. Mehr Tiefe, mehr Kontext, mehr Bedeutung. Sie erlaubt es uns, Veränderungen sichtbar zu machen – im Licht, in der Stimmung, im Leben.

Street Photography ist kein Hexenwerk, aber sie verlangt Aufmerksamkeit, Geduld und Offenheit.

Hier sind ein paar einfache Schritte, wie du dich vom Einzelbild zur Serie weiterentwickeln kannst:

1. Beobachte

Bevor du fotografierst, nimm dir Zeit zum Schauen. Welche Szenen, Lichtverhältnisse oder Bewegungen wiederholen sich? Welche Atmosphäre zieht dich an?

2. Finde dein Mini-Thema

Suche nach einem roten Faden: Menschen im Regen, Schatten an Wänden, wartende Gesten, Spiegelungen, Farben. Eine Serie beginnt oft mit drei Bildern, die „miteinander sprechen“.

3. Fotografiere in Sequenzen

Statt nur auf den einen Moment zu warten, bleib in Bewegung. Beobachte, wie sich eine Szene verändert. Halte verschiedene Perspektiven, Entfernungen oder Emotionen fest.

4. Lerne, bewusst auszuwählen

Eine Serie lebt nicht von Quantität, sondern von Rhythmus. Drei bis sieben Bilder mit einer inneren Verbindung reichen oft völlig aus.
