Hi there dear supporters. We wanted to let you know that we’ve just restarted what used to be called The Icelandic Roundup. It is a 30-40 minutes long podcast where we discuss some of the main news stories of the past week. In this first episode, we had journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson from the Icelandic news publication Heimildin and musician/author Sindri Eldon on with us to discuss amongst other things:

✨ Volcanoes!
✨ The Blue Lagoon!
✨ Whaling licences issued by caretaker Government
✨ Þorlákshöfn's rejection of Heidelberg!
✨ What's up with Skeifan?!
✨ Diegó the cat's kidnapping and recovery!
✨ More!

The host is The Reykjavík Grapevine’s publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson.

We aim to publish this podcast weekly in the new year, to keep you up to date to what is happening in Iceland. Listen below:

FROM THE MAG

Another new issue of the Reykjavík Grapevine hit the streets of the capital this morning and it is another very important one to pick up.

For the cover feature, Catharine Fulton looked into the past and present of whaling in Iceland and pondered what the future holds for an industry that even the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Svandís Svavarsdóttir called “completely futile and obsolete.” Iceland’s sole whaling company, Hvalur hf, is hunting right now — they brought their first fin whale of the season into their whaling station this morning. Will their licence be renewed at the end of the year? Read the feature now.

Also in our new issue, Iryna Zubenko spoke with a single mother who has turned to dumpster diving in order to put food on the table. “This is a sign of a deeper problem and we should act now,” she told Iryna. “But I can’t see any initiative from the government or the social services side.” Read the article here.

FROM THE MAG

Another new issue of the Reykjavík Grapevine hit the streets of the capital this morning and it is an important one to pick up.

For the cover feature, Jóhannes Bjarkason took a closer look at the new Law on Foreigners the government passed in March of this year. It was put into practice with predictably devastating effects this month, putting 50 asylum seekers on the streets. It’s an important probe of Iceland’s immigration history to date and the direction the current government seems determined to head. Read it here.

FROM THE MAG

Our new issue hit the streets of Reykjavík this morning!

It’s Pride week in Reykjavík — yes, we celebrate in August instead of June like many other countries — and the city is aflutter with rainbow flags, a newly painted Pride street on Vegamótastígur and the annual Pride Parade on the horizon (Saturday at 14:00, to be exact).

To mark the occasion, we connected with the board of the Icelandic BDSM Organization to talk about being under the umbrella of Iceland’s national queer association, Samtökin ‘78, safety and consent within their community and the advocacy being carried out for BDSM-oriented individuals. Read Catharine Fulton’s feature right here.

Also in our latest issue, Francesca Stoppani recaps another raucous weekend at the Norðanpaunk festival, where heavy music meets with warm DIT community vibes and camping. Give it a read here.

Our new issue hit the streets of Reykjavík this morning! On the cover and the feature spread is the iconic and incomparable Sigur Rós. Contributor Árni Hjörvar caught up with band members Kjartan Sveinsson, who has rejoined Sigur Rós after 10 years away, and Georg Hólm to discuss the bands first new album since 2017. Átta is a “gigantic” release that has the reunited trio currently touring with a full orchestra in an effort to do the grandness of the sound justice. Read the feature right here.

We at the Reykjavík Grapevine celebrated our 20th birthday on June 13. That’s 20 years of celebrating everything that makes this city amazing and gently pointing out where ever so minor improvements might be warranted. To mark this auspicious occasion, we invited our past editors to write a little something about their time helming the Grapevine. Talk a stroll down memory lane right here.

We also invited our OG designer, Hörður Kristbjörnsson, to take over the cover. Check it out in all its glory!

Icelandic movies have been exploring various genres with great success in recent years. These days, it’s not uncommon to come across a Nordic noir film from our small island or even find the occasional Icelandic comedy screening at your local cinema. But an Icelandic thriller? Another new issue of the Grapevine hit the streets this weekend. Everyone has faced challenges over the course of the global pandemic brought on by COVID-19, but it may have hit kids the worst. Two Krakkaveldi journalists wanted to learn more about the state of youth mental health in Iceland and what resources there are for kids who may be struggling. Here’s what they learned.

Kids can do amazing things if given the opportunity. One program, The Upbeat, aims to foster the musical creativity of young artists by giving them the chance to work alongside professional musicians and ultimately perform their own compositions on Iceland’s biggest stage. GIVE US A HIGH FIVE

It's your friends at the Reykjavík Grapevine, popping back into your inbox with a hello and to share the the latest issue of the magazine, which hit newsstands across Iceland this morning.

Have you ever played Dungeons & Dragons or other tabletop role playing games?

TRPGs (as the coolest kids call them) have seen a massive rise in mainstream popularity in recent years. They're so popular, in fact, that TRPG events are held at Reykjavík game shops and bars. Longtime players have even found themselves gigging as professional Dungeon or Game Masters.

Catherine Magnúsdóttir went on a quest to learn more about the rise in popularity of TRPGs and rolled a NAT 20 in the process. Read her cover feature here.

That's it from us this week. As always, thanks for your support.

It's your friends at the Reykjavík Grapevine, popping back into your inbox with a hello and to share the the latest from the northernmost capital in the world.

The biggest headline in Iceland these days is the ongoing labour dispute between the Efling labour union and the Icelandic Confederation of Business (SA).

Efling members are many of the people who keep society functioning — including a huge number of people in the service and tourism industry, as well as truck drivers and much more. Union members voted to begin strike action on Feb. 15, withdrawing the labour of 500 employees from the Íslandshotel and Berjaya chains, as well as from the Reykjavík Edition — Iceland's only five-star accommodation. Read more on that here.

Now SA has dropped a live grenade onto the negotiating table, voting overwhelmingly in favour of imposing work stoppage on Efling union members. Read more about that right here.

Why do business owners have the option of punishing employees for exercising their right to strike? How does that make any sense whatsoever from the perspective of labour laws? What's the purpose of trade unions when that poison pill exists?

No really, someone explain it to us. We're stumped.

What we're not confused about is being big fans of people exploring their craft while recycling materials. That's why we paid a visit to the Kjalarnes studio of glass blower Anders Vange. Check it out:

It's your friends at the Reykjavík Grapevine, popping back into your inbox with a hello from HQ and to share the the latest issue of the magazine, which hit newsstands across Iceland this morning.

Our cover feature takes a closer look at Iceland's system of submarine telecommunications cables, through which all of our data connectivity with the big wide world travels. What threats to the cables is the government currently monitoring? And what would life in Iceland look like if the cables went bust?

Read Catharine Fulton's feature article right here. And take a peek below at the issue, with an amazing cover illustration by the wickedly talented Kosmonatka.

That's it from us this week. As always, thanks for your support and your undying love.

It is your friends at the Reykjavík Grapevine, popping back into your inbox with a hello and an update from GV HQ.

We're hard at work putting the finishing touches on the February issue of the Grapevine — look out for your early-access PDF in next week's newsletter. It's shaping up to be a really good one; you won't want to miss it. Seriously.

What's already out and ready for your eyeballs is our latest YouTube video. We were dying to know how the northern lights work and found ourselves wondering what, if anything, influences their activity. So, we turned to Marcel de Vries, meteorologist extraordinaire from the Icelandic Met Office, for his expert explanation.

Give it a watch.

That's it from us this week. As always, thanks for your support and your undying love.

We promised you an update about the changes to the different tiers of our High Five Club and,  just like Dominos, we always deliver. So read on for the low down.

THE HIGH FIVE TIER: If you’re on a budget but still want to support the Reykjavík Grapevine, our High Five Level membership is for you. In exchange for your support, we’ll add you to our ultra-exclusive mailing list so you get first-in-the-know details about the Reykjavík Grapevine’s events (anything from parties and concerts to hikes and tours), sweet deals in the Grapevine Store and weekly updates on life in Iceland. Plus we'll send you a link to the latest issue of the Reykjavík Grapevine, and throw in ad-free browsing on grapevine.is and a 5% discount in the Grapevine Store.

THE DOUBLE HIGH FIVE TIER: Holy smokes, you’re a fan and we’re here for it. In addition to all the perks afforded to the High Five Club members (that super amazing and ultra-exclusive weekly newsletter and event access, and a link to our latest issue), you’ll get a whopping 10% discount in the Grapevine Store.

THE UP HIGH, DOWN LOW TIER (formerly known as the High Five with a secret handshake): We can really feel your love — on two levels! In this tier of the High Five Club, you can expect that professionally-written, über-exclusive newsletter to keep you in the know about Grapevine events and what’s happening in Iceland, plus a massive 20% discount in the Grapevine Store. But wait, there’s more! You’ll also receive an 8% discount when booking tours through our Go Travel portal.

THE FLYING HIGH FIVE TIER (formerly known as the Elbow Five): Your love for the Reykjavík Grapevine reverberates through space and leaves a satisfying sting on the palm. It hurts so good. In exchange for your support you’ll get everything offered to other tiers of the club — that’s the amazing weekly newsletter, first-in-line event access, a massive 20% discount in the Grapevine Store, and an 8% discount when booking tours through our Go Travel portal — plus a physical copy of the Grapevine mailed right to you anywhere in the world. That’s 18 magazines to read, breathe in the sweet smell of, and repurpose as cutting edge, eco-chic wrapping paper.

So what's changed? Aside from a cuple tiers getting new names, one big upgrade to all our tiers are amazing Grapevine events.

That's right, the Grapevine is returning to its roots, organising concerts with bands that appear in our pages, planning outlandish road trips for barbecues in the countryside (and so much more), and hosting awards shows for our annual Grapevine Music Awards and Grapevine Design Awards. High Five Club members will be the first to know about it all and have first dibs on being added to the guest list.

Join the tier of your choosing to show your love for the Reykjavík Grapevine.

Speaking of bands (or musicians) appearing in our pages, did you read the latest Track-by-Track with the wickedly talented Gugusar?

Her album, 12:48, has been playing on repeat at Grapevine HQ. Give it a listen while reading through the meaning behind each and every song.
