It’s been a hot week – literally: temperatures climbed above 30°C (86°F). All the better that the weekend is just around the corner – a perfect time to go for a swim and relax. But to stay well-informed about heatwaves, flash floods, or just the weather in the coming days, ESA has launched a new weather satellite into space.With that in mind: happy weekend!

ESA satellite launched to improve weather forecasts

A new weather satellite has been launched from French Guiana. Metop-SGA1, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), aims to improve short-term weather forecasts up to twelve days in advance. Earlier, MTG-S1 was also launched, primarily to enhance predictions of extreme weather events. Source: BELGA NEWS AGENCY

Hair-based toothpaste targets cavities

Scientists have developed a keratin-based toothpaste. It repairs tooth enamel, stops early cavities, and seals pain channels. The protein is derived from hair or wool and, together with minerals in saliva, forms a protective layer. Source: BBC

U.S. high-speed train for a transportation revolution

Starting at the end of August, new high-speed trains will connect Washington, New York, and Boston. The NextGen Acela trains offer more space, more frequent service, and aim to make switching from cars or planes easier. Built in the U.S., they have also secured 15,000 jobs. After 86 years: Britain’s largest grasshopper returns

Thanks to the conservation program Hop of Hope, the Great Marsh Grasshopper has returned to the Broads. The species was last seen hatching in the wild in 1939, and its population had sharply declined due to habitat loss. Pre-treated eggs helped establish new populations in marshes and wetlands. Sensors in action against urban heat islands

New technologies are making urban heat islands visible and helping to cool the most vulnerable neighborhoods. For example, Boston’s Common SENSES project measures temperatures in real time using more than three dozen sensors in the Roxbury neighborhood.
