Today, we have three positive updates from the U.S.: Americans are drinking less alcohol, the crime rate is falling, and balcony solar panels are booming. A great way to start the new week!

New eye drops could replace reading glasses
VIZZ is the first aceclidine-based eye drop solution designed to relieve age-related farsightedness. The drops slightly constrict the pupil, allowing up to ten hours of clear vision – without reading glasses. Clinical studies confirm good tolerability. Record low: Fewer americans are drinking alcohol
Alcohol Consumption Hits Historic Low in the U.S.. In the U.S., alcohol consumption is falling to a historic low. According to a Gallup survey, only 54 percent of Americans report drinking alcohol – the lowest level since the end of Prohibition in 1939. Source: CBS NEWS

Crime in the U.S. declines in 2024
Violent crime in the U.S. fell by 4.5% in 2024, including a nearly 15% drop in homicides, according to an FBI report. Property crimes also decreased: vehicle thefts by 18.6%, burglaries by 8.6%, and larcenies by 5.5%. This continues the downward trend in crime observed since the COVID-19 pandemic. Source: STATELINE

U.S.: Solar Panels for Balconies and Patios on the Rise
Small solar systems are gaining popularity in the U.S. as tax incentives for rooftop installations are phased out. They are affordable, easy to install, and help reduce CO₂ emissions. For many homeowners, these compact systems could be an attractive alternative. Source: FAST COMPANY

MeluXina: Luxembourg’s Green Supercomputer
Our modern world relies on supercomputers – which consume a lot of CO₂. MeluXina demonstrates a more environmentally friendly approach: the supercomputer is powered entirely by renewable energy, primarily from Norwegian hydropower, and cleverly uses waste heat for cooling. Despite its green technology, MeluXina delivers computing power equivalent to tens of thousands of PCs. Source: RESET

Goats to the rescue against wildfires in Spain
In Mataró, Catalonia, a pilot project is using around 300 goats to create natural firebreaks. The animals eat underbrush and thorny vegetation, reducing the risk of wildfires. Traditional livestock grazing is being revived, with shepherds receiving compensation for their work. The project is part of an EU-funded program addressing the growing wildfire threat in Southern Europe caused by climate change. Source: INDEPENDENT
