August 20, 2025
Hello dear Good News community,
during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people around me were unable to work – and some even lost their jobs. At the time, it was often hard to tell whether everything was legally above board. Now, a landmark ruling from Australia has set a precedent: the airline Qantas was fined the equivalent of 50 million euros for illegal layoffs during the pandemic. It will be interesting to see whether this ruling becomes a precedent for future cases.

Global suicide rates have been declining since 1990
Researchers analyzing WHO data found that suicide rates in 102 countries dropped by nearly 30 percent between 1990 and 2021. The global average fell from 10.33 to 7.24 cases per 100,000 people. Contributing factors include, among others, improved access to mental health care. // If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for support.
