Brazil – Love, Science, and Saudade

Many people ask me about my travels to Brazil.

1986, my first time in Brazilian Amazonia. 1986, meine erste Reise ins brasilianische Amazonasgebiet.

They see the photos and short videos I share on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, glimpses of a country that has been part of my life for nearly four decades.

This time, I do not send you the usual newsletter about photography or projects. It’s more of a travel tale, a little window into my soul and history as a passionate tropical ecologist and Brazil-lover.

In the Pantanal, at some point you cannot drive by car nor by boat. Horses then are the best option for transportation / Im Pantanal gibt es Zeitpunkte, da kann man weder mit dem Auto noch mit dem Boot fahren. Pferde sind dann die beste Transportmöglichkeit.

Why Brazil?

Since 1986 I return to Brazil, almost every year. I lived there for almost 5 years, always on the Amazon River, for research at the Max-Planck Institute and the National Institute for Amazon Research INPA.

I will be there the whole month of November 2025. Duty and love. Love for the people, the landscapes, the music, and the endless curiosity that this country awakens in me.

Brazil is not just a destination. It’s a rhythm, a scent, a heartbeat.

It’s the laughter in the streets, the sound of people lauging, the taste of tacaca and pão de queijo, and the gentle chaos that feels so alive.

Where it all began

It started in 1986. I was 21, a young biology student, and I set foot in the Amazon rainforest for the first time.

For a biologist, it was like reaching Mecca — an overwhelming universe of life, beauty, and mystery. Every day felt like a revelation. And every answer I found raised ten new questions. That’s how research begins and how passion never ends.

Safety first... in 1995, I needed to collect flowers and fruits to be able to determine the exact tree species. In a boat on the river not really the safest way to do it... but in those times we were absolutely free, no rules / Sicherheit geht vor... 1995 musste ich Blüten und Früchte sammeln, um die genaue Baumrt bestimmen zu können. Mit einem Boot auf dem Fluss war das nicht gerade die sicherste Methode... aber damals waren wir völlig frei, es gab kaum Regeln.

A normal way of getting around, even on the motorway, in the 1990s / Normale Art der Fortbewegung, auch auf der Schnellstraße, in den 1990er Jahren.

Over the years, I returned again and again: for fieldwork, for conferences, for Water People Stories, and above all, for the feeling of belonging. Because yes, I do speak Portuguese, with a slight Italian accent that makes people smile and ask if I’m from São Paulo. That’s one of my proudest moments! My vocabulary, however, comes from the long months I spent alongside Amazonian fishermen and is therefore rather unsophisticated :-)

Field work is not always fun, moskitos, mud, so many unpredictable things appearing... but we never give up! / Feldarbeit ist nicht nur ein Vergnügen, Mücken, Schlamm, so viele unvorhersehbare Dinge tauchen auf... aber wir geben niemals auf!

Brazil in my heart

I know the old songs by heart — from Chico Buarque to Caetano Veloso, from Timbalada to Daniela Mercury, Marisa Monte, Raul Seixas and Chico César, Mamonas Assassinas and Maria Gadú. I love the Brazilian spirit, resilient, creative, joyful even in difficulty, always positive and with a big felt smile.

There is a word for my feelings: “saudade.” It means missing something you love deeply, knowing it will always stay within you.

I spent 5 days on a ship, exlaining the ecology of Amazonian floodplains to Jane Goodall and having great chats about life, conservation and much more / Ich verbrachte 5 Tage auf einem Schiff, erklärte Jane Goodall die Ökologie der Überschwemmungsgebiete des Amazonas und führte tolle Gespräche mit ihr über das Leben, Naturschutz und vieles mehr.

What I’m doing now

This November I am first traveling to Rio de Janeiro, then to a conference in Brasília, the COP30 in Belém, and then on a research expedition deep into the Amazon between Manaus and São Gabriel da Cachoeira with the University of Manaus.

I will continue my work on Water People Stories, coached by two great award-winning photographers and friends: Lois Lammerhuber and Hans-Jürgen Burkard.

I will meet my scientific colleagues and communities who live with and from water, listening to their voices and photographing their stories.

Science, art, and humanity flow together there, as they always have for me.

Our connection with water is fundamental. Here, my whole brazilian-german working group is taking a post-conference bath in a natural river pool / Unsere Verbindung zum Wasser ist grundlegend. Hier nimmt meine gesamte brasilianisch-deutsche Arbeitsgruppe nach einer Tagung ein Bad in einem natürlichen Flussbecken.

Pantanal 2024, the day when the lowest water level ever was recorded. The normally moist flooded forest was burning all around / Pantanal 2024, an dem Tag an dem der niedrigste je gemessene Wasserstand aufgezeichnet wurde. Überall in der Gegend brannte der sonst so feuchte Überschwemmungswald.

It’s not just a trip. It is a return to something that has shaped my entire life, to the river that still runs inside me.

Meeting and collaborating with local people is essential in science and in life / Die Begegnung und Zusammenarbeit mit den Menschen vor Ort ist das A&O inder Wissenschaft und im Leben.

Brasilien – Liebe, Wissenschaft und Saudade

Friends and family think: aha, Pia is sitting in a hammock on the Amazon rivers with a caipirinha, on vacation... but that's not quite how it is! Although both are never missing! / Freunde und Familie denken: aha, Pia sitzt am Amazonas mit Caipirinha in der Hängematte und macht Urlaub... aber ganz so ist es dann doch nicht! Obwohl beides niemals fehlt!

Diesmal schicke ich euch nicht den üblichen Newsletter über Fotografie oder Projekte. Es ist eher eine Reiseerzählung, ein kleiner Blick in meine Seele und meine Geschichte als leidenschaftliche Tropenökologin und Brasilien-Liebhaberin.

Warum Brasilien?

Seit 1986 kehre ich fast jedes Jahr nach Brasilien zurück. Fast fünf Jahre lang lebte ich dort, immer am Amazonas, für meine Forschung am Max-Planck-Institut und am Nationalen Institut für Amazonasforschung (INPA).

In 1986, I was 21 and in the Amazon for the first time. Far from civilization, I burned my foot, and it took me five days to get treatment in a rudimentary country hospital under improvised general anesthesia. My foot had become badly infected, but... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? / 1986 war ich 21 und zum ersten Mal in Amazonien. Weitab von der Zivilisation verbrannte ich mir zu allem Überfluss den Fuss und brauchte 5 Tage, bis ich in einem Krankenhaus - oder eher Lazarett am Ende der Welt - mit improvisierter Vollnarkose behandelt werden konnte. Es hatte sich heftig entzündet, aber... was nicht tötet macht hart...

Den ganzen Monat November 2025 werde ich dort sein. Pflicht und Liebe. Liebe zu den Menschen, den Landschaften, der Musik und der unstillbaren Neugier, die dieses Land in mir weckt.

Brasilien ist nicht nur ein Reiseziel. Es ist ein Rhythmus, ein Duft, ein Herzschlag. Es ist das Lachen auf den Straßen, das Lachen der Menschen, der Geschmack von Tacaca und Pão de Queijo und das sanfte Chaos, das so lebendig wirkt.

Wo alles begann

Es begann 1986. Ich war 21, eine junge Biologiestudentin, und betrat zum ersten Mal den Amazonas-Regenwald.

In 1988, I travelled the entire length of the Amazon River for many months on various boats and ships. It was my dream, from the Andes in Peru to the river's mouth in Belém. What an experience! / 1988-1988 bin ich den gesamten Amazonas runtergefahren, viele Monate lang, auf unterschiedlichen Booten und Schiffen. Das war mein Traum, von den Anden in Peru bis zur Mündung in Belém. Was für eine Erfahrung!

Für eine Biologin war es wie die Ankunft in Mekka – ein überwältigendes Universum voller Leben, Schönheit und Geheimnisse. Jeder Tag fühlte sich wie eine Offenbarung an. Und jede Antwort, die ich fand, warf zehn neue Fragen auf. So beginnt Forschung und so endet die Leidenschaft nie.

Beautiful, sophisticated, exciting, highly scientific conferences are also part of the everyday life of a tropical researcher / Schöne, gediegene, spannende, hochgradig wissenschaftliche Konferenzen gehören auch zum Alltag der Tropenforscherin.

Über die Jahre kehrte ich immer wieder zurück: für Feldstudien, für Konferenzen, für „Water People Stories“ und vor allem wegen des Gefühls der Zugehörigkeit. Denn ja, ich spreche Portugiesisch, mit einem leichten italienischen Akzent, der die Leute zum Schmunzeln bringt und sie fragen lässt, ob ich aus São Paulo komme. Das ist einer meiner stolzesten Momente! Wobei mein Wortschatz aus den langen Monaten an der Seite der Amazonas-Fischer stammt und entsprechend eher wenig anspruchsvoll ist :-)

Brasilien in meinem Herzen

Ich kenne alle alten Lieder auswendig – von Chico Buarque bis Caetano Veloso, von Timbalada bis Daniela Mercury, Marisa Monte, Raul Seixas und Chico César, Mamonas Assassinas und Maria Gadú. Ich liebe den brasilianischen Geist: widerstandsfähig, kreativ, lebensfroh selbst in schwierigen Zeiten, immer positiv und mit einem herzlichen Lächeln.

Für meine Gefühle gibt es ein Wort: „Saudade“. Es bedeutet, etwas zu vermissen, das man tief liebt, und zu wissen, dass es immer in einem bleiben wird.

Was ich gerade mache

Diesen November reise ich zuerst nach Rio de Janeiro, dann Tagung in Brasília, COP30 in Belém und dann eine Forschungsexpedition tief in den Amazonas zwischen Manaus und São Gabriel da Cachoeira, mit der Uni Manaus.

Ich werde meine Arbeit an „Water People Stories“ fortsetzen, unterstützt von zwei großartigen, preisgekrönten Fotografen und Freunden: Lois Lammerhuber und Hans-Jürgen Burkard.

Ich werde meine wissenschaftlichen Kollegen und die lokalen Gemeinschaften (“comunidades”) treffen, die mit und am Wasser leben, ihren Stimmen lauschen und ihre Geschichten fotografisch festhalten. Wissenschaft, Kunst und Menschlichkeit verschmelzen dort, wie schon immer für mich.
