Over the past month or so, my fiancée and I have had a splendid time going through the early output of Dark Castle Entertainment, a production shingle set up at Warner Bros in the late '90s to remake the jerry-rigged films of midcentury horror maestro William Castle. They abandoned that mission pretty promptly and expanded to a general genre purview that included the likes of Orphan and Splice, but their first handful of releases hold together as a coherent canon, united by an emphasis on old-school practical effects (paired, in some memorable instances, with crude first-gen CGI).
