The psychology of street photography

Street photography forces us to let go of control.

We can't plan anything – not the light, not the people, not the moments. And that's precisely where its power lies. It confronts us with our insecurity, with intimacy and with encounters with strangers.

The biggest hurdle is rarely photographic. It's emotional. Pointing the camera at a stranger means becoming visible. And that is precisely what frightens many people.

The longer I do street photography, the clearer it becomes to me: the camera is rarely the problem.

It is our fears. Our moral doubts. Our need for control and perhaps also a little bit of longing for connection.

Street photography confronts us with much of this. It forces us to be present, to see, to perceive, to get close without overstepping the mark.

Our images are not created from what is happening outside, but from what resonates within us. What do I see here?

That's why motifs repeat themselves in my photo catalogue, why my series grow over the years. And that is why ‘your own style’ is perhaps not a goal, but a result.

Those who photograph on the street learn:

• To regulate inhibitions instead of avoiding them

• To endure closeness

• To take responsibility

• To let go of control

Perhaps that is the true value of street photography: it does not make us better photographers, but it makes us more attentive to life.

Die Psychologie der Streetfotografie

Streetfotografie zwingt uns, Kontrolle loszulassen.

Wir können nichts planen – weder Licht noch Menschen noch Momente. Und genau darin liegt ihre Kraft. Sie konfrontiert uns mit unserer Unsicherheit und der Begegnung fremder Menschen. dem Nahetreten.

Die größte Hürde ist selten fotografisch. Sie ist emotional. Die Kamera auf einen fremden Menschen zu richten bedeutet, sichtbar zu werden. Und genau das macht vielen Angst.

Je länger ich Streetfotografie mache, desto klarer wird mir: die Kamera ist selten das Problem.

Es sind unsere Ängste. Unsere moralischen Zweifel. Unser Bedürfnis nach Kontrolle und vielleicht auch ein bisschen die Sehnsucht nach Verbindung.

Streetfotografie konfrontiert uns mit vielem davon.

Sie zwingt uns, präsent zu sein, zu sehen, wahrzunehmen, nah zu kommen, ohne zu übertreten.

Unsere Bilder entstehen nicht aus dem, was draußen passiert, sondern aus dem, was in uns mitschwingt. Was sehe ICH HIER?

Deshalb wiederholen sich Motive in meinem Foto-Katalog, deshalb wachsen meine Serien über Jahre. Und deshalb ist vielleicht „der eigene Stil“ kein Ziel, sondern ein Ergebnis.

Wer auf der Straße fotografiert, lernt:

• Hemmungen zu regulieren statt zu vermeiden

• Nähe auszuhalten

• Verantwortung zu übernehmen

• Kontrolle loszulassen

Vielleicht ist das der wahre Wert der Streetfotografie: sie macht uns nicht zu besseren Fotograf:innen, aber sie macht uns aufmerksamer für das Leben.
