What does photography achieve? Sebastião Salgado and the power of beauty

Sebastião Salgado has photographed the great wounds of this world: labour, exploitation, migration, environmental destruction.

And at some point, he asked himself another question: What is still there?

With Genesis, he turned his gaze to untouched landscapes, indigenous communities, water, rainforests and animal worlds. Not as an escape, but as an alternative. Beauty as an invitation to look – and to stay.

Salgado's images are highly aesthetic. That is precisely what has always been controversial. But this beauty does not trivialise anything. It binds us emotionally. It creates closeness. And attention.

The crucial thing is that Salgado did not stop at showing. With the Instituto Terra, which he founded in 1998 with Lélia Wanick Salgado, over two million trees have been planted. Water sources have returned. The landscape has regenerated.

Photography is no substitute for analysis. But it can trigger something that analysis alone rarely achieves: responsibility.

Perhaps that is Salgado's greatest achievement: he doesn't just show what is being destroyed. He asks what we do with this knowledge.

Mit Genesis richtete er den Blick auf unberührte Landschaften, indigene Gemeinschaften, auf Wasser, Regenwald, Tierwelten. Nicht als Flucht, sondern als Gegenentwurf. Schönheit als Einladung, hinzusehen – und zu bleiben.

Salgados Bilder sind hochästhetisch. Genau das war immer umstritten. Doch diese Schönheit verharmlost nichts. Sie bindet uns emotional. Sie schafft Nähe. Und Aufmerksamkeit.

Entscheidend ist, dass Salgado nicht beim Zeigen stehen blieb. Mit dem Instituto Terra, das er 1998 mit Lélia Wanick Salgado gründete, wurden über zwei Millionen Bäume gepflanzt. Wasserquellen kehrten zurück. Landschaft regenerierte sich.
