Film Recommendation

If there’s ever a time to bone up on previous adaptations of Emily Brontë’s classic story of tempered yearning and bitter class division on the windswept moors of Yorkshire, as we sit in the pointy shadow of Emerald Fennell’s upcoming blockbuster bonanza with Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie.

And there are some really good ones out there to catch: I’m a big fan of the 1939 William Wyler version with Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. And there’s an amazing, if very obscure, Japanese version from 1988 by filmmaker Yoshishige Yoshida which reframes the story in the same way that Akira Kurosawa did to King Lear with his film Ran.
