About success through passion

This week I stumbled upon something truly inspiring.

I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts, The Candid Frame by Ibarionex Perello, and in the latest episode, conservation photographer Justin Black said something that made me hit pause.

He was talking about the challenges of making a living as a photographer, especially in the niche of conservation photography. And then he said this:

“The only people I know who have been successful in this business are people who can’t imagine doing anything else.

That is their drive.

They just identify as a photographer.

Photography is so deeply important to them that that’s what they are going to do.

They are going to make it work.” 

That made me listen. Because it’s not just about photography: it is about anything we feel deeply passionate about.

If you feel that burning enthusiasm, that unshakable inner “yes”, then you owe it to yourself to follow it. That’s what makes people succeed, musicians, dancers, athletes, artists, scientists… the drive to do what they cannot not do.

For me, that was biology. My high school teacher warned me: “Don’t study biology, it leads nowhere.” Later, when I did, people joked I’d end up driving a taxi. And many of my peers did, just to pay rent.

I never drove a taxi. I made my living in tropical ecology, simply because I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. And when I shifted to photography and writing, it was the same story. It wasn’t easy, but it was mine.

So, if there is something you feel that strongly about, don’t wait. Go for it.

Über Erfolg durch Leidenschaft

Diese Woche bin ich auf etwas wirklich Inspirierendes gestoßen.

Ich hörte einen meiner Lieblingspodcasts, „The Candid Frame“ von Ibarionex Perello, und in der neuesten Folge sagte der Naturfotograf Justin Black etwas, das mich aufhören ließ.

Er sprach über die Herausforderungen, als Fotograf seinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen, insbesondere in der Nische der Naturschutzfotografie. Und dann sagte er:

„Die einzigen, die ich kenne, die in diesem Geschäft erfolgreich sind, können sich gar nichts anderes vorstellen.

Das ist ihr Antrieb.

Sie identifizieren sich einfach als Fotografen.

Fotografie ist ihnen so wichtig, dass sie genau das tun werden.

Sie werden es schaffen.“

Das hat mich zum Nachdenken gebracht. Denn es geht nicht nur um Fotografie: Es geht um alles, wofür wir eine tiefe Leidenschaft empfinden.

Wenn du diese brennende Begeisterung spürst, dieses unerschütterliche innere „Ja“, dann bist du es dir selbst schuldig, ihr zu folgen. Das macht Menschen erfolgreich – Musiker, Tänzer, Sportler, Künstler, Wissenschaftler … der Antrieb, das zu tun, was sie nicht lassen können.

Für mich war das Biologie. Mein Abi-Lehrer warnte mich: „Studiere keine Biologie, das führt nirgendwo hin.“ Später, als ich es doch studierte, scherzten die Leute, ich würde wohl bald Taxi fahren. Und viele meiner Kommilitonen taten es dann, um die Miete bezahlen zu können.

Ich bin nie Taxi gefahren. Ich verdiente meinen Lebensunterhalt mit Tropenökologie, einfach weil ich mir nichts anderes vorstellen konnte. Und als ich zur Fotografie und zum Schreiben wechselte, war es dasselbe. Es war nicht einfach, aber es war meins.

Also, wenn es etwas gibt, das dich so sehr bewegt, warte nicht. Mach es.

Wir leben doch nur einmal…
