Episode 3, The Tummy

This week is the time for the first real topic of Midlife Man. Afters some suggestions from your end (thank you for your input!) and consulting ChatGPT, I decided to deal with what I would call “changes in our outward appearance”. Ok, maybe it simply was the look in the mirror yesterday evening that brought me to this topic. Anyway- I guess you already know what I am aiming to so without further ado let’s jump right in!

I always was the skinny boy. When I was little, my mother needed to feed me while I was playing with my little Siku cars to keep me alive. I even had to drink Sanostol i.e., a mutivitamin sirup which is supposed to stimulate hunger as a byproduct. Spoiler alert: It didn‘t work for me. Did anyone of you had a different experience with comparable products? Let me know!(rocketenterprises24@gmail.com (Abre numa nova janela)) The baseline is that I literally had no interest in food at all. Sorry mam- you are a great cook but I did not appreciate freshly cooked meals back in the days.

When I started my studies I met a guy, let‘s call him Hulk. Hulk was working out, eating, studying and sometimes sleeping- that was basically it. And I wanted to be like him! So I started to work out as well and discovered that food and eating is more than an unavoidable nuisance. I am not so much into sweets, but I can hardly live without some kind of fast food. There is not a single week without two to three days of pizza, doner/ dinah/ donah (there does not seem to be an equivalent in the US!?) or fries with some kind of chicken. My body was always cool with that until some time around my 30th birthday when I discovered just a tiny tummy appearing. Until today, that tiny tummy grew a little although I would claim that I am still in charge of the situation. Why is that the case? Scientifically proven literature 😉 states that your calorie needs decline when you are getting older. Simply put, you need to adjust what you are eating and/ or the amount you are eating. I guess you agree with me that changing a well-established behaviour is difficult- especially when you enjoy doing it. It might seem disengaged but I will keep things as they are. At least until my tummy reaches the next level. I am very lucky that my wife is cool with me and how things are (THANK YOU!).

I will take this episode as the starter of a little series all around health and fitness in your prime years. Stay tuned for next week!
