The Myth of the Lone Wolf

Many of us love to wander alone with our camera. No schedule, no chatter, just walking, observing, becoming still. And then getting into that magical state of flow, playing like a child: focused, creative and free.

When I take photos, I am more efficient when I am alone. // Beim Fotografieren bin ich effizienter, wenn ich alleine bin.

But here is my thought of the week, inspired by New York photographer Steve Simon: “Build your circle, and you will build yourself.”

And as I am writing my own newsletter, here comes the one by Ashley Riffo, a great photographer and co-editor of the Street Photography Magazine Podcast. She also writes “Street Photography May Be a Solo Art, But Growth Happens Together”.

So it seems to be a more general thought that goes viral at the moment…

Nothing like exchanging thoughts and glasses with Martin Parr! Here, I literally see the world through his glasses! // Es gibt nichts Schöneres, als mit Martin Parr Gedanken und Brillen auszutauschen! Hier sehe ich die Welt buchstäblich durch seine Brille!

But: a community supports you, challenges you and brings friendship and laughter.

Photo walks, critique groups, workshops, joint exhibitions are not distractions. They are accelerators and mirrors. They offer fresh perspectives and new angles.

Photography may feel solitary. But growing as a photographer rarely happens in isolation. So maybe it is time to question the romantic myth of the lonely genius.

It is good to look out for a companion or a circle of like-minded photographers to exchange with, and to help you sort out your best photos.

Advantages of not taking photos alone:

  1. Inspiration

    You see how others interpret the world, and it sparks new ideas for your own work.

  2. Constructive Feedback

    Others see things in your photos that you might miss. Honest critique sharpens your eye.

  3. Accountability

    You are more likely to keep shooting, editing, and showing up, especially when motivation dips.

  4. Skill Sharing

    You learn tips, techniques, and new tools casually from peers, not textbooks.

  5. Perspective

    You realize there’s no single “right way” to photograph. This frees and expands your vision.

  6. Support & Encouragement

    During creative lows, others lift you up. You are not alone in your doubts.

  7. Opportunities

    Exhibitions, collaborations, group projects often arise from within a circle.

  8. Joy

    Photography becomes playful. Conversations, laughter, and shared experiences enrich the process.

  9. Confidence

    The more you show and discuss your work, the more you trust your voice and vision.

  10. Belonging

    You feel seen, understood, connected to others who share your passion.

Der Mythos vom einsamen Wolf

Viele von uns lieben es, allein mit der Kamera unterwegs zu sein. Kein Zeitplan, kein Geplauder, einfach nur spazieren gehen, beobachten, zur Ruhe kommen. Und dann in diesen magischen Flow-Zustand kommen, spielen wie ein Kind: konzentriert, kreativ und frei.

Only when I am alone do I get into the state of flow and immerse myself completely in the moment. // Nur wenn ich alleine bin, komme ich in den Flow und tauche total im Moment ab.

Aber hier ist mein Gedanke der Woche, inspiriert vom New Yorker Fotografen Steve Simon: „Baue deinen Kreis, und du baust dich selbst auf.“

Going out with lots of other photographers also has advantages. You discover more things, but most importantly, it's about networking. // Mit vielen anderen Fotografen loszuziehen bringt auch Vorteile. Du entdeckst mehr Dinge, vor allem aber geht es um das Networking.

Und während ich gerade meinen eigenen Newsletter schreibe, kommt hier der von Ashley Riffo, einer großartigen Fotografin und Mitherausgeberin des Street Photography Magazine Podcasts. Sie schreibt: „Straßenfotografie mag eine Einzelkunst sein, aber gemeinsam wächst man.“

Es scheint also ein allgemeiner Gedanke zu sein, der gerade umgeht …

I was invited to Vienna with a group of German photographers to show the city from a street photography perspective. We had a great time exploring the city in a group! // Mit einer Gruppe deutscher Fotografen waren wir in Wien eingeladen, um die Stadt aus Streetfotografie-Perspektive zu zeigen. Super, im Pulk durch die Stadt zu ziehen!

Aber: eine Gemeinschaft unterstützt, fordert heraus und bringt Freundschaft und Lachen.

Foto-Spaziergänge, Kritikgruppen, Workshops, Gemeinschaftsausstellungen sind keine Ablenkung. Sie sind Impulsgeber und Spiegel. Sie bieten frische Perspektiven und neue Blickwinkel.

Fotografie mag sich einsam anfühlen. Doch fotografisches Wachstum geschieht selten in Isolation. Vielleicht ist es also an der Zeit, den romantischen Mythos des einsamen Genies zu hinterfragen.

Es ist gut, sich einen Weggefährten oder einen Kreis gleichgesinnter Fotografen zu suchen, mit denen man sich austauschen kann, die einem helfen, die besten Fotos zu selektieren, mit denen es einfach Spaß macht, zusammen zu sein.

Vorteile einer Fotogruppe:

  1. Inspiration

    Du siehst, wie andere die Welt wahrnehmen und bekommst neue Ideen für dein eigenes Sehen.

  2. Konstruktives Feedback

    Andere entdecken in deinen Bildern Dinge, die dir entgehen. Ehrliche Rückmeldungen schärfen deinen Blick.

  3. Verbindlichkeit

    Du bleibst eher dran, am Fotografieren, am Bearbeiten, am Zeigen. Auch wenn die Motivation mal nachlässt.

  4. Wissen teilen

    Technik, Tricks, Tools: ganz nebenbei lernt man voneinander, ohne Lehrbuch.

  5. Perspektivenwechsel

    Du erkennst: Es gibt nicht die eine richtige Art zu fotografieren. Das macht frei.

  6. Unterstützung & Ermutigung

    Wenn du zweifelst, tragen dich die anderen. Du bist nicht allein mit deinen Unsicherheiten.

  7. Neue Chancen

    Gemeinschaft bringt Gelegenheiten: Ausstellungen, Projekte, Kooperationen entstehen oft im Kreis Gleichgesinnter.

  8. Freude

    Fotografie wird spielerischer. Gespräche, Lachen und geteilte Erlebnisse bereichern den Prozess.

  9. Selbstvertrauen

    Je öfter du deine Bilder zeigst und darüber sprichst, desto mehr vertraust du deinem eigenen Stil.

  10. Zugehörigkeit

    Du fühlst dich gesehen, zugehörig, verbunden mit Menschen, die deine Leidenschaft teilen.
