Inspiration or Plagiarism?

I saw a short video comparing the dance scene in 1994's "Pulp Fiction" with the one in Fellini's cult film "8 1/2" from 1963.

The famous dance scenes from Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and the movement from Fellini's 8 1/2, 31 years earlier, are very similar. Is this more of a cool homage or simply a copy?

I also remember that I once stood in front of a sculpture by Jan Fabre at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence. The sculpture was powerful, a reclining Jesus with a veil over his face. I immediately recognized the famous "Il Cristo Velato," a masterpiece by Giuseppe Sanmartino from the 18th century in Naples. Only, in this case, it was a woman. And there was no reference to the original. Neither in the title nor in the accompanying booklet. Not even the museum guide knew about it. A coincidence? Or a conscious act of appropriation?

Since then, the question has remained: Where does inspiration end and plagiarism begin? When I listen to the last song by The Hives “Enough is Enough” it starts with something that immediately recalls “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Do I like that? Not sure about this one.

But I always find it wonderful when great minds inspire each other. When Oasis makes music that resonates with the Beatles – how wonderful is that? It has always been this way: We thrive on impulses, influences, and resonances. This whole discussion about "stealing ideas" often seems absurd to me.

And Jens F. Kruse commented under one of my Instagram posts: "I see it the same way, if you don't copy, but rather appropriate and modify the impulses..."

That's exactly it. I think art thrives on the fact that we don't reinvent everything. We are influenced by others, we inspire each other. Inspiration is movement and transformation.

In photography, we also constantly look at other images. We allow ourselves to be touched, we interpret, and we try out new things. Sometimes it might be imitation, but often I see it as creativity. The line is fine, but if the influence of others is shown respectfully and honestly, I don't find that objectionable. The difference lies in the intention and attitude.

It is good to develop my own idea, even if some of it has already been there. It is an ability to transform what I see so that it becomes something new through my own eyes. I don't always have to reinvent the wheel, do I?

Ich habe ein kurzes Video gesehen, in dem die Tanzszene in „Pulp Fiction“ von 1994 mit der in Fellinis Kultfilm „8 ½“ von 1963 verglichen wird, s.o.

Die berühmten Tanzszenen aus Tarantinos Pulp Fiction und die fast identische Bewegung aus Fellinis 8½, 31 Jahre früher, sind sehr ähnlich. Ist das eher eine coole Hommage oder just eine Kopie?

Eine andere Erinnerung war, als ich in der Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence vor einer Skulptur von Jan Fabre stand. Die Skulptur war stark, der liegende Jesus mit einem Schleier über dem Gesicht. Ich erkannte sofort das berühmte „Il Cristo Velato“, ein Meisterwerk von Giuseppe Sanmartino aus dem 18. Jahrhundert in Neapel. Nur: hier war es eine Frau. Und kein Hinweis auf das Original. Weder im Titel noch im Begleitheft. Nicht mal die Museumsführerin wusste davon. Ein Zufall? Oder ein bewusster Akt der Aneignung?

Seitdem stelle ich mir die Frage: Wo endet Inspiration und wo beginnt Plagiat? Wenn ich mir den letzten Song von The Hives „Enough is Enough“ anhöre, beginnt er mit etwas, das mich sofort an „Smells Like Teen Spirit“ erinnert. Gefällt mir das? In diesem Fall bin ich mir nicht so sicher.

Aber eigentlich finde ich es wunderbar, wenn sich große Köpfe aneinander inspirieren. Wenn Oasis Musik machen, in denen die Beatles mitschwingen – wie schön ist das? Das war doch schon immer so: Wir leben von Impulsen, von Einflüssen, von Resonanzen. Diese ganze Diskussion um das “Klauen von Ideen” wirkt auf mich oft absurd. Ein bisschen wichtigtuerisch, oder? Und Jens F. Kruse kommentierte unter einem meinem Instagram-Post: „Sehe ich auch so, wenn man nicht kopiert, sondern sich die Impulse zu eigen macht und modifiziert …“

Genau das ist es. Ich denke, Kunst lebt davon, dass wir nicht alles neu erfinden. Wir werden von anderen beeinflusst, wir inspirieren uns. Inspiration ist Bewegung und Transformation.

In der Fotografie schauen wir auch ständig andere Bilder an. Wir lassen uns berühren, wir interpretieren und wir probieren Neues aus. Manchmal ist es vielleicht Nachahmung, oft sehe ich darin Kreativität. Der Grat ist schmal, aber wenn der Einfluss anderer mit Respekt und ehrlich gezeigt wird, finde ich das nicht verwerflich. Der Unterschied liegt in der Absicht und Haltung.

Es ist gut, meine eigene Idee zu entwickeln, auch wenn ein Teil davon schon mal da war. Es ist eine Fähigkeit, das Gesehene so zu verwandeln, dass es durch mich hindurch etwas Neues wird. Ich muss das Rad nicht immer neu erfinden, oder?
