As the week wraps up, we’re celebrating positive news from many parts of the globe: Suriname is the first country in the Amazon region to be officially declared malaria-free. Lisbon becomes the first European capital to introduce a deposit system for reusable to-go cups. Starting in 2026, Cannes will limit cruise ships to just one per day. And encouraging developments are also coming from Denmark, Kenya, Barbados, Somalia, and more.

Suriname declared malaria-free for the first time

Suriname has become the first country in the Amazon region to be officially recognized as malaria-free by the World Health Organization. The country focused on rapid diagnostics, free treatment, and mobile health teams reaching even remote rainforest villages. In 2001, there were still 15,000 cases—today, there are none. Lisbon introduces deposit system for reusable to-go cups

Lisbon is the first European capital to officially launch a deposit and return system for reusable to-go cups. Customers get their deposit back at designated return stations. The goal is to reduce waste—full implementation is planned for October 2025. Source: EURONEWS

Cannes limits cruise tourism

Beginning in 2026, only one large cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers will be allowed to dock in Cannes each day. By 2030, only ships with a maximum of 1,300 passengers will be permitted. The city is responding to environmental concerns and the pressures of overtourism. Source: EURONEWS

Great Britain plans to triple its solar energy capacity

The British government has unveiled a new roadmap to significantly expand solar power across the country. The plan includes tripling the current capacity. Apartment buildings will be equipped with easy-to-use plug-in solar panels that can connect directly to standard outlets. Denmark: Copyright law to combat deepfakes

Denmark has introduced a draft law aimed at tackling deepfakes. The proposal would automatically grant all residents a form of copyright over their voice and appearance. Countries call for tax on private jets and luxury flights

At the UN Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, countries including Kenya, Barbados, Somalia, Benin, Sierra Leone, and Antigua and Barbuda called for a tax on private jets and luxury flights. The goal: to use the revenue to support climate protection and sustainable development. France and Spain have voiced their support for the initiative. Source: EURONEWS
